PURPLE HEART DAY: In March, 2017, the Town Board officially proclaimed the Town of Malta as an official Purple Heart Town. On Monday, August 7, Purple Heart Day, at 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Veterans Memorial, 2540 Route 9, the Town will hold an official ceremony to show Malta’s great admiration and utmost gratitude for the men and women who have selflessly served our Country and this community. The events start with an unveiling of signs declaring Malta a Purple Heart Town. BALLSTON SPA VILLAGE CEMETERY: The Ballston Spa Cemetery Associatio­n is looking for volunteers to help with several projects in the village cemetery. People are needed for gravestone cleaning, fence painting, brush trimming. Tuesday, August 8, is one of the times scheduled for volunteers to continue this needed work. BREAST CANCER FORUM: To Life! will present an educationa­l forum on Breast Cancer at Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs. Presenters include Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Physician, Nutritioni­st and Breast Cancer Survivor; Martin Tenniswood, PhD, Director, Cancer Research Center at University at Albany; and Keri Lyn Walsh, Teacher, Mom and Breast Cancer Survivor. GRANT COTTAGE: “The Man Who Ruined U.S. Grant,” 1 p.m. In May 1884, Ferdinand Ward robbed Ulysses S. Grant and his family of every dime they had. For his crimes, Mr. Ward (one of the boldest embezzlers of the Gilded Age) was sentenced to 10 years in prison. None of the money he stole was ever recovered. As Mr. Ward (played by Grant Cottage tour guide Steve Trimm) is about to be released from Sing Sing, he will be questioned about his role in General Grant’s tragic downfall. 1000 Mt. CARDBOARD BOAT RACE: Hudson Crossing Park presents its 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 12, (rain date is Sunday, August 13) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylervi­lle from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “The Erie Canal, We Dig It!” celebratin­g the bicentenni­al of the Erie Canal. Race participan­ts will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100 percent recycled materials, holding at least one crew member and “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event (materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee). During race preparatio­ns, there will be food, live music and lots of creativity. The first cardboard boat race launches at 1 p.m. Admission is free for spectators.
