Pair charged after shooting
Man hurt person’s hand while hunting, police say
HEBRON, N.Y. » An Argyle man has been charged with second-degree assault, a felony, following investigation into a Nov. 25 huntingrelated shooting incident in Hebron, Washington County.
Shane Jarvis, 39, was also arrested for three misdemeanors – second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree falsely reporting an incident, and making a false written statement — and trespassing, a violation, authorities said.
Police say Jarvis recklessly discharged his firearm, causing serious damage to the hand of hunting partner, Kenneth Fish, 43, of Moreau, who was also charged in the incident. The men were trespassing on private property while deer hunting after dark, police say.
Fish, in addition to trespassing, was charged with two misdemeanors — third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree falsely reporting an incident.
Although accidental, charges were lodged because of the incident’s alleged unsafe, negligent nature and because the men were trespassing.
Jarvis faces maximum penalties of up to of seven years in state prison and fines of $5,000 for the felony and $3,000 for the misdemeanors.
Fish faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and fines of $2,000 for the misdemeanor charges.
The two men were arraigned at Washington County Sheriff’s Office facilities in Fort Edward. Both entered pleas of not guilty.
They were both sent to Washington County Jail pending $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.
Charges were filed after a more than two-month long investigation by state Department of Environmental Conservation personnel from the Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigations, DEC environmental police offi-
cers, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the county district attorney’s office.
The New York State Police Forensic Crime Center in Albany also assisted.
Both men could lose their hunting licenses pending the outcome of the case.
The next court date is set for March 19 in Town of Hebron Court.
