SARATOGA SPRINGS JoAnn Smith Maloney peacefully passed away on March 20th, 2018. She was 89. JoAnn was pre-deceased in 2012 by the love of her life and husband of 62 years, Michael J. Maloney.

A lifelong Saratogian, JoAnn loved her home, and her pride and joy was raising three daughters, Nancy Maloney, Marcia Szochet (Mel), and Kelly Brown (Garrett). JoAnn was a woman of faith and her daily prayers to numerous saints helped find lost keys, heal ailing pets, and everything in between. A parishioner of St. Clement’s Church, in health JoAnn would attend weekly mass service and always pay a visit to the statue of St. John Neumann for a special prayer. In her working career, JoAnn was an operator for New York Telephone and was an assistant to the innkeeper at the Holiday Inn before becoming a full time homemaker, the job that she most cherished and at which she excelled. JoAnn loved cooking and made the most delicious homemade meals for her family. With a loving heart, JoAnn welcomed her mother Grace into her home and cared for her until her passing. As the youngest of six siblings, there was always a story to tell of her adventures with her four brothers, Russell, Dick, Lenny, and Stanley, and two sisters Pauline Ryall and Ruth Cummings. She loved Saratoga racetrack season and spending time in August at the track with her youngest brother Stan who she nicknamed Bubbie. JoAnn’s hobbies included the two G’s: Gardening and Gambling (not in that order). JoAnn loved her home and summer Saratoga nights spent on her porch with her neighbors on East Avenue. Her daughter Nancy’s home-cooked meals with evening TV, (Wheel of Fortune was her favorite) were daily pleasures. One of her scheduled treats was weekly hair appointments with her friend Patricia at JCPenney Salon. JoAnn was “Nannie” to her four grandchildren. Grandson Sandy Campoli (Nancy) and granddaughters Abigail, Nora, and Mageean Brown (Kelly). Her smile could not be brighter than when she was in their company and there was always a special treat to be handed to them that was followed by the words “don’t tell your mom.” She was proud of her daughter Kelly and son in law Garry in the beer business, and when she frequented local restaurants she would always ask if they had “Brown’s beer on tap.” During appointments to many doctors and hospitals she always mentioned with pride her daughter Marcia, a Critical Care nurse at Princeton Medical Hospital Intensive Care Unit. She is also survived by her beloved niece Diane Strong and nephews, Kevin, Keith and Christopher Cummings, in-law family, Sid and Doris Brown, neighbor, Delia Faiola along with cousins and friends, too numerous to name. JoAnn’s family wishes to thank Molly Hollbritter of Pine Valley Home, along with her Saratoga doctors, Tammy Wheeler, Theodoros Laddis, George Silver, and Richard Jones for years of kindness, compassion, and excellent medical care. In JoAnn’s heaven her family wishes her love and peace and we know she now can see all the beautiful colors of the rainbow. Donations can be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation in her honor.

Relatives and friends may call from 10am to 12noon on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373). Funeral services will follow at noon at the funeral home and burial will be at a later date.
