Section II stars return home for UAlbany lax tilts
Sports staff ALBANY >> The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team will be looking for its second straight win to start conference play and third consecutive victory overall when it hosts Binghamton at 1 p.m. Saturday in Casey Stadium. The Great Danes (2-7, 1-0 America East) are coming off a 23-5 victory over Hartford this past Saturday in the conference opener. UAlbany has scored 35 goals in its past two games combined. UAlbany owns a 16-0 all-time record against Binghamton (4-5, 1-0), including a 21-10 victory in Vestal last season. UAlbany’s roster includes four-time America East Rookie of the Week Kendra Harbinger (Clifton Park/ Shenendehowa H.S.), freshman defense Ava Katinas (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) along with freshman middie Jordyn Marr (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). The Bearcats opened their America East schedule with a win also, beating Vermont, 15-8, in Burlington and bring a large Section II group home for the Easter holiday including: sophomore defense Megan Balter (West Sand Lake/Albany Academy for Girls), sophomore defense Alexa Franze (Glenville/ Niskayuna H.S.), sophomore midfielder Alissa Franze (Glenville/Niskayuna H.S.), freshman defense Natasha Rahal (Queensbury/ Queensbury H.S.), junior midfielder Rebecca Golderman (Albany/Guilderland H.S.). SMITH COLLEGE 18, SOUTHERN VERMONT 1 » Freshman attack Alex Safford (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake H.S.) scored the lone goal for the Mountaineers and also picked up a ground ball in the loss Wednesday afternoon at Smith. Senior goalie Kelsey Carrera (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) played the first 51:50 between the pipes—making 13 saves in the loss. Senior attack Kristiana Goldup (Schuylerville/ Schuylerville H.S.) and sophomore defense Abigail Landon (South Glens Falls/ South High) saw action for Southern Vermont. II will be represented by senior midfielder Josh Egan (Delmar/Albany Academy) while the Sea Wolves bring a quartet of Section II talent in senior long stick middie Kyle Abdellatif (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa H.S.) who has secured 21 ground balls this season and caused seven turnovers, sophomore defense Jake Shephard (Rexford/Niskayuna H.S.), freshman middie Michael Stiso (Latham/Shaker H.S.) and freshman long stick middie Matt Morris (Rennselaer/Columbia H.S.). MITCHELL 9, SOUTHERN VT 1 (5 inn)/ MITCHELL 14/ SVC 1 (5 inn) >> Southern Vermont College started its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) softball schedule Friday afternoon at Mitchell College—falling 9-0 and then 14-1 in a pair of runshortened games. In the opener sophomore Taylor Jarosz (Karaganda, Kazahstan/Lansingburgh H.S.) went 1-for 2 with a double for the Mountaineers. Sophomore left fielder Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls/ South High) went 0-for-1 in the opener with senior catcher Nicole Matthews (Pittstown/Tamarac H.S.) reaching base in both games by drawing a walk, hitless in both contests. In the second stanza she sacrificed and stole a base in the for Southern Vermont. The Mountaineers (0-14, 0-2 NECC) are back on the road Saturday for their next twin bill with SVC visiting Dean College for a 1 p.m. Conference start.
