CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY
Local resident seeks state Senate seat
HALFMOON, N.Y. » On a windy morning at Hayner’s Food and Ice Cream, Daphne Jordan kicked off her state Senate campaign.
Jordan, a Republican, currently serves as councilwoman in the town of Halfmoon, as well as serving for the past six years under current state Sen. Kathy Marchione as a legislative director and Senate Local Government Committee director.
Marchione, who announced her retirement this year, spoke about why she supports Jordan.
“When Daphne came into town she was an independent businesswoman, and that independent businesswoman is what we need in the Senate. She worked tirelessly, had employees,” said Marchione. “She knows what it is to make a payroll. Those are critically important elements when you walk into the Senate.”
Jordan has been endorsed by the Saratoga, Rensselaer, Columbia and Washington County Republican Committees, the New York State Independent Party, the Conservative Party of New York State, the Reform Party of New York and the Upstate Conservative Coalition. Jordan spoke about increasing opportunities, making living in Upstate New York more affordable and security. She also referenced her experience as a small-business owner.
“I plan to bring what I learned creating and running my own business to the state Senate. I hope to put that hands-on experience to work for the local job creators that are working hard every day but are finding that Albany all too often is hampering their abil-

ity to grow and prosper,” said Jordan. “It shouldn’t be that way, and when I’m in the Senate, [small business owners], can count on me as being a partner. I will be the voice that will stand up for you and to help you, and if you have suggestions to give to me, I want to hear them.”
According to a news release, Jordan is running to: serve as a check and balance to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to defend the Upstate economy, values and way of life; increase affordability and economic opportunity by reducing wasteful spending, cutting government regulations and debt and lowering property taxes; preserve and protect the Second Amendment; honor our veterans and law enforcement; oppose sanctuary cities and free college education for illegal immigrants.
In addition to Marchione and Jordan, Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen spoke.
“I have experienced firsthand the impact and the power and the significance that Daphne’s knowledge, her experience and her expertise with not just criminal justice matters that I deal with on a regular basis in the district attorney’s office, but across the board, the impact that she makes in Saratoga County and the rest of the district she’s going to be representing for all of us in January.”
Halfmoon Town Supervisor Kevin Tollisen said Jordan has been an advocate for trails, open spaces and low taxes.
“If you know Daphne, she’s not afraid to say her opinion about what she believes in, and I believe that is going to take her so far in the state, because we need somebody like her, like Sen. Marchione as well, who is not afraid to stand up and to say what’s right is right and to do what is right,” said Tollisen.
Rensselaer County resident Aaron Gladd, a Democrat, filed his candidacy with the Board of Elections earlier this month. The former deputy director of policy in Cuomo’s office, Gladd helped spearhead policies on issues like the fight for statewide broadband, women’s rights, paid family leave, combating the opioid epidemic and the $100 billion infrastructure program. In a statement on his candidacy he said, “At a time when our working and middle class families are struggling to get ahead, New Yorkers need a fighter who has the passion to serve and the character to get it done, I was proud to serve my country in Afghanistan and as a state senator I will serve my community and fight to restore hope, compassion, and opportunity to Upstate New York.”
The 43rd Senate District includes parts of Saratoga and Washington counties, most of Rensselaer County, and all of Columbia County. The district includes much of Saratoga Springs, and a portion of Troy.
