Records set at Fasig-Tipton’s NY-bred sale

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y .» Closing night of Fa sig-Tip ton’ s NY-bred preferred year ling sale built on the strong showing of Saturday’s opening session, helping the event soar to new records for gross sales ($18,492,000, a 14.0 percent increase over the previous record of $16,214,000 set last year) and average sale price ($107,512, a whopping 20.7 percent improvemen­t over the previous mark of $89,088, also set last year).

Last night’s session also saw a new high establishe­d for an individual yearling, as hip no. 588, a colt by Pioneer of the Nile out of the A.P. Indy mare Score, went for $600,000. Thorndale Farm, Agent, consigned the colt, who was purchased by Shortleaf Stable. The colt is from the family of multiple Grade 1 winners Educated Risk and Hall of Famer Inside Informatio­n. The previous record, set last year, was $500,000 for Tut, an as-yet unraced son of Cairo Prince.

This year’s median price of $76,000 was also a new high, bettering last year’s $69,500.

The buy-back rate, which registered at 41.2 percent on Saturday, improved significan­tly at Sunday’s session, dropping to 27.6 percent. The overall rate for this year’s sale (34.6 percent) was significan­tly higher than last year’s record low of 25.4 percent but within range of the average of 31.2 percent for the eight previous sales since 2010.

Sunday’s second-highest seller was hip no. 573, a filly by Into Mischief out of six-time stakes winner Risky Rachel, by Limehouse, who went for a high bid of $350,000. Paramount Sales, Agent, consigned the filly, who was purchased by Kindred Sales LLC. The filly’s second dam is Grade 3 winner and $490k earner Dancin Renee. Her third dam is Lolli Lucka Lolli, producer of all-time New York-bred great Say Florida Sandy, who died at 24 last month.

City Zip (three sold for an average of $200,000) and Street Sense (three sold for an average of $166,667) had the best averages for sires with three or more yearlings sold. Next was second-crop sire Cairo Prince at $155,000 and first-crop sire Honor Code at $147,500. Individual offerings selling for $250,000 or more on Sunday included a second yearling by Into Mischief (hip no. 573, $350k), as well as yearlings by City Zip (hip no. 530, $300k), Blame (hip no. 547, $285k), Candy Ride (hip no. 577, $250k) and Hard Spun (hip no. 589, $250k).
