October events set at Moreau Lake State Park

MOREAU N.Y. >> The following events are planned at Moreau Lake State Park in October.

• October 1: Baker Loop Hike (10 a.m.-noon). Roughly three miles.

• October 3: Moreau Overlook to Ridge Run Hike (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) Strenuous hike, bring water and lunch.

• October 4: Knee High Naturalist (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) These classes are for children ages 1-6 and their parents/ guardians along with siblings. Classes have short story or two based on the outdoors followed by a short hike. Fee is $1 per child.

• October 5: Hudson River Kayak (1-4 p.m.) Park naturalist will lead this paddle along the river pointing out signs of wildlife while teaching strokes and kayaking safety. Kayak rentals for $15, must be 18 years old to rent. Meet and pay at the park office.

• October 6: Baker Trail Hike (10 a.m-noon). About two miles.

• October 8: Friend’s Meeting (7 p.m.) Friends of Moreau Lake State Park is a nonprofit organizati­on dedicated to the support and promotion of environmen­tal education programs and other activities at Moreau Lake State Park. Guests are welcome at monthly meetings to discuss next events and general members’ informatio­n. New members are always welcome. Meetings are held in the park Nature Center.

• October 9: Waterfall to Lake Ann Hike (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) This will be about a 5-mile hike starting at the Lake Bonita parking lot.

• October 11: Moreau Kayak Trip (10 a.m.-noon) Park Naturalist will lead this paddle along the river pointing out signs of wildlife while teaching strokes and kayaking safety. Kayak rentals for $15, must be 18 years old to rent. Meet and pay at the park office.

• October 12: Lake Bonita/ Lake Ann/Cottage Park Hike (1-5 p.m.) This will be a long hike (about 6.5 miles) starting at Lake Bonita to the Lake Ann Trail to the Eastern Ridge

trail all the way over to the Cottage park trail and down the mountain. Meet and pay at park office. Fee for kids and anyone 62 and older is $1; others $2.

• October 13: Lake Bonita Hike (1-3:30 p.m.) About two miles with views of the lake.

• October 16: Potter Point Hike (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) A trail-free parcel of the park with views of the Hudson River. This is a flat, bushwhacki­ng hike. Meet and pay at park office. Fee for kids and anyone 62 and older is $1; others $2.

• October 18: Knee High Naturalist (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) These classes are for children ages 1-6 and their parents/guardians along with siblings. Classes have short story or two based on the outdoors followed by a short hike. Fee is $1 per child.

• October 20: Spring Overlook Hike (1-3:30 p.m.) Steep, two miles round trip. Meet and pay at park office. Fee for kids and anyone 62 and older is $1; others $2.

• October 23: Western Ridge Hike (9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) Meet and pay at park office. Fee for kids and anyone 62 and older is $1; others $2.

• October 24: Stonewall Run Hike (1-3:30 p.m.) This trail is about 3.5-miles round trip.

• October 24: All About Bats (4-5 p.m.) Educator talks about the bats of New York and why they are important. Fee is $1 for children and seniors over 62; $2 for adults.

• October 25: Full moon hike led by park naturalist (7-9 p.m.).

• October 26: Eastern Ridge Hike (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) A nearly six-mile hike; bring plenty of water, snacks and a lunch.

• October 26: Moreau Kayak Trip (6-8 p.m.). Twilight paddle around the lake. Kayak rentals for $15, must be 18 years old to rent. Meet and pay at the park office.

• October 27: Haunted Halloween Walk (6-7:30 p.m.) Sponsored by Friends of Moreau Lake. Take a haunted walk with refreshmen­ts and activities afterwards. Advance registrati­on and a $5 per car fee are required. Call park office (518)-793-0511 to make reservatio­ns or for questions. Proceeds benefit park educationa­l programs.

• October 29: Stonewall Run Hike (1-4 p.m.) This trail overlookin­g the Hudson River is about 3.5-miles round trip.

• October 30: Critter Crawl (5-6 p.m.) A search for small creatures. Meet at park office.

• October 31: Turtle Talk (5-6 p.m.) Learn about turtles in the park Nature Center. Fee is $1 for children and seniors over 62; $2 for adults.

Programs are weather permitting and are subject to change. Call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participan­ts should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear appropriat­e clothing and footwear. There are program fees with all classes and many activities.

Registrati­on is required for most activities as well.

If there are no participan­ts signed up, classes can be cancelled at the discretion of the park.

Moreau Lake State Park is located off Exit 17S of the Northway.
