NEW FASHION STORE
Troy Threads set to open this weekend
TROY, N.Y. >> Local business Troy Threads is making its mark on the downtown fashion scene with its first retail store.
Troy Threads will debut its new shop this weekend with a grand opening party from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at its 469 Fulton St. location in downtown Troy. At this event, customers who make the first 20 purchases of the day will receive a special gift bag.
Originally an online retail company, Troy Threads was founded about a year ago by Collar City native Paula Donohue.
The new Troy Threads boutique carries women’s fashions for both everyday and special events, including accessories.
Troy Threads carries a wide range of styles that reflects Donohue’s own varied tastes. “I have some stuff if you want to be really girly, or if you want to be tomboy — because that’s how I am.”
While young women and area college students are the main market demographic for Troy Threads, Donohue strives for the shop to have merchandise that appeals to all shoppers.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Donohue, who aims to always stay on top of the trends with her inventory.
Donohue also wants Troy Threads to be an affordable place to shop by offering reasonably priced items.
Whether someone is shopping for a special occasion or just looking to update their wardrobe, “I definitely want to be able to help people look good,” Donohue said. “I want people to know that they can come here for just simple outfits or event outfits.”
On why she started Troy Threads, “I just always wanted to own my own business,” said Donohue, who comes from an entrepreneurial family. Just across the city line in North Greenbush, her mom owns Maria’s Sewing Center, and her uncle owns Moscatiello’s Family Italian Restaurant.
Growing up with these examples inspired Donohue to pursue entrepreneurship as well. “That’s why I decided to own my own business,” she said.
In addition to Saturday’s grand opening party, Troy Threads will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local officials and the Downtown Troy Business Improvement District next month.
Looking ahead to the future of Troy Threads, Donohue plans to soon work with her mom’s business Maria’s Sewing Center to offer alterations and dry cleaning services out of the downtown boutique space.
Donohue’s ultimate goal for Troy Threads is to open a second store location.
Following the grand opening on Saturday, the shop’s regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as well as 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
