FUN RUN & SNEAKER DRIVE: The Lansingburgh Central School District’s (LCSD) Family Fun Run/Walk is on May 18, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m. in the back parking lot of Lansingburgh High School, which will also be the starting line for the race. The Fun Run is an annual community event organized by the Lansingburgh CSD Wellness Committee. Registration is free and participants can sign up on Runsignup.com or on the Lansingburgh website (Lansingburgh.org). Leading up to the Fun Run, the Wellness Committee is holding an athletic shoe drive fundraiser to raise money for Senior Scholarships. The Committee earns funds based on the total pairs of gently worn, used or new sneakers collected. The District will apply these funds to their Senior Scholarships program benefiting students. The District is collaborating with GotSneakers, a shoe recycling organization that issues funds in compensation for collected sneakers. All are welcome to donate sneakers at any Lansingburgh School Health Office or on the day of the Fun Run. STUDENT FILMS: Crandell Theatre Hosts Free Screening of Student Films from 2019 After School Project. The premiere community screening of three short films produced by area student filmmakers takes place at the Crandell Theatre, 48 Main Street, Chatham, NY, on Saturday, May 18, at noon. The films were created and produced by students from Chatham, Hudson, and Germantown public schools as part of this year’s Crandell Theatre After School Filmmaking Project (ASFP). POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY: “A MILL WORKER’S LIFE - 1835” presented by Phyllis Chapman. Phyllis Chapman has presented many programs around the area. She portrays women and their contributions to history. She dresses the part and puts herself in the woman’s shoes. This month she will portray Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) who was a teacher, poet and author. After her father’s death her mother moved from Beverly, Mass. to Lowell with her 10 children. In 1835 at age 11 Lucy began working at Boott Mills, a cotton mill, as a doffer to earn extra money for her family. She was a steady contributor to The Lowell Offering and while at Lowell developed a friendship with John Greenleaf Whittier. In later years she became a teacher and poet, eventually publishing several books, among them “A New England Childhood.” Phyllis will include audience participation during the program since part of the presentation involves creating a “mock textile mill.” Come and join us on Tuesday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall on Route 351 in the downstairs meeting room. The program is free, everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided. IRISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM: Place Names in Ireland, Two Rivers Gaelic League, 7 p.m., 370 Broadway, Albany. ST. JEAN BAPTISTE DAY: St. Jean Baptiste Day Celebration & “Je Me Souviens…I Remember” with Dr. Janet Shideler. La Fédération Franco-Américaine du NY, will celebrate the feast of St. John the Baptist with a mass and reception on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 119Broad St. in Waterford. The celebrant will be Father Jeffery L’Arche officiating the mass in English and French with a choir singing French hymns. Following the mass, La Fédération FrancoAméricaine du NY welcomes Dr. Janet Shideler from Siena College to bring her project, “Je Me Souviens…I Remember,” to the reception, to be held in the parish hall. Dr. Shideler project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, seeks to digitally preserve the rich cultural heritage of upstate New York FrancoAmerican communities. Individuals can bring old family photos, toys, religious medals, newspapers clippings, needlework, sheet music, bobbins, spindles, military medals, anything that helps to tell your Franco-American story. The items will be scanned and entered into the database. Eventually, the items will be able to be viewed at the New York Heritage Digital Collection that is online. The public is invited.
