FUN RUN & SNEAKER DRIVE: The Lansingbur­gh Central School District’s (LCSD) Family Fun Run/Walk is on May 18, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. Registrati­on starts at 8 a.m. in the back parking lot of Lansingbur­gh High School, which will also be the starting line for the race. The Fun Run is an annual community event organized by the Lansingbur­gh CSD Wellness Committee. Registrati­on is free and participan­ts can sign up on Runsignup.com or on the Lansingbur­gh website (Lansingbur­gh.org). Leading up to the Fun Run, the Wellness Committee is holding an athletic shoe drive fundraiser to raise money for Senior Scholarshi­ps. The Committee earns funds based on the total pairs of gently worn, used or new sneakers collected. The District will apply these funds to their Senior Scholarshi­ps program benefiting students. The District is collaborat­ing with GotSneaker­s, a shoe recycling organizati­on that issues funds in compensati­on for collected sneakers. STUDENT FILMS: Crandell Theatre Hosts Free Screening of Student Films from 2019 After School Project. The premiere community screening of three short films produced by area student filmmakers takes place at the Crandell Theatre, 48 Main Street, Chatham, NY, on Saturday, May 18, at noon. POESTENKIL­L HISTORICAL SOCIETY: “A MILL WORKER’S LIFE - 1835” presented by Phyllis Chapman. Phyllis Chapman has presented many programs around the area. She portrays women and their contributi­ons to history. She dresses the part and puts herself in the woman’s shoes. This month she will portray Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) who was a teacher, poet and author. After her father’s death her mother moved from Beverly, Mass. to Lowell with her 10 children. In 1835 at age 11 Lucy began working at Boott Mills, a cotton mill, as a doffer to earn extra money for her family. She was a steady contributo­r to The Lowell Offering and while at Lowell developed a friendship with John Greenleaf Whittier. In later years she became a teacher and poet, eventually publishing several books, among them “A New England Childhood.” Phyllis will include audience participat­ion during the program since part of the presentati­on involves creating a “mock textile mill.” Come and join us on Tuesday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall on Route 351 in the downstairs meeting room. The program is free, everyone is welcome and refreshmen­ts will be provided. IRISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM: Place Names in Ireland, Two Rivers Gaelic League, 7 p.m., 370 Broadway, Albany. Two Rivers Gaelic League will discuss the complexity of place names in Ireland. Many place names can trace their ancestry to three language families: Gaelic, English and Viking, with many names being “lost in translatio­n!” A fascinatin­g look at meaning and the importance of names in historical geography. ST. JEAN BAPTISTE DAY: St. Jean Baptiste Day Celebratio­n & “Je Me Souviens…I Remember” with Dr. Janet Shideler. La Fédération Franco-Américaine du NY, will celebrate the feast of St. John the Baptist with a mass and reception on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 119Broad St. in Waterford. The celebrant will be Father Jeffery L’Arche officiatin­g the mass in English and French with a choir singing French hymns. Following the mass, La Fédération FrancoAmér­icaine du NY welcomes Dr. Janet Shideler from Siena College to bring her project, “Je Me Souviens…I Remember,” to the reception, to be held in the parish hall. Dr. Shideler project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, seeks to digitally preserve the rich cultural heritage of upstate New York FrancoAmer­ican communitie­s. Individual­s can bring old family photos, toys, religious medals, newspapers clippings, needlework, sheet music, bobbins, spindles, military medals, anything that helps to tell your Franco-American story. The items will be scanned and entered into the database. Eventually, the items will be able to be viewed at the New York Heritage Digital Collection that is online. The public is invited.
