DPW receives approval for water main replacement
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> At the May 21 City Council Meeting, Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco received City Council approval to award a contract for the water main replacement along Kaydeross Avenue West and Nelson Avenue Extension to Bellamy Construction.
The contract agreed to put the cost at $1,308,770.
“This is another example of a smart improvement to the City’s water infrastructure,” Scirocco said.
“This water main replacement project on Kaydeross Avenue West and Nelson Avenue Extension will significantly reduce the frequency of breaks in this area.”
Businesses along South Broadway reported noticeable variance in water pressure.
Historical data indicated numerous water main breaks along Route 9, and Kaydeross Avenue Waste and Nelson Avenue Extension. The area experiences heavy traffic and vehicles
traveling at high speeds, causing emergency repairs to be difficult and dangerous.
“During these emergency breaks I’ve been on site with the utilities crew, sometimes at night, and when cars are speeding past it’s very concerning. I’ll be happy to see these mains replaced to provide a better quality service to the public and to keep the work force out of harm’s way during repairs,” Scirocco added.
Bellamy Construction will replace 9,800 linear feet of existing 6-inch iron pipe with new 8-inch High Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE). The new HDPE pipe has a non-corrosive nature.
The contractor will be replacing existing fire hydrants, valves and installing air release valves and vaults. The construction work will be completed with horizontal directional drilling for minimal environmental impact and cost savings.
The total project has been designed, administered and inspected by MJ Engineering and Land Surveying, P.C.
Bellamy Construction is in the process of completing the water main replacement on South Broadway along Route 9, replacing 6,500 linear feet replacing an 8-inch water main with 10-ince HDPE pipe.
The contract cost for that project was $1,066,782, for a total investment into the water infrastructure of $2,375,552.
