Potter named school superinten­dent

MECHANICVI­LLE, N.Y. >> Bruce Potter has been named new superinten­dent of Mechanicvi­lle City Schools under a three-year contract with a $180,000 starting salary.

Currently superinten­dent at Berkshire Union Free School District, in Canaan, he will join the Mechanicvi­lle district on July 15, replacing interim Superinten­dent Jon Hunter.

Potter has been with the Berkshire district for the past 15 years. He began his career in education in 1994 as a business teacher at the Ballston Spa Central School District. During his tenure there he also served as a career and technical education teacher leader and dean of students.

In 2002 Potter was hired as the assistant principal at Stillwater Middle-High School until he was promoted to principal. He held that position until 2004.

Potter’s career with the Berkshire Union Free School District began as the assistant superinten­dent for curriculum and instructio­n. He was the district’s assistant superinten­dent

for business for two years before his appointmen­t as superinten­dent in 2011.

“I feel as though the breadth of experience­s I have gained during my career have prepared me very well as I join the Mechanicvi­lle school community. In particular my experience with curriculum, instructio­n, finance, and profession­al developmen­t will benefit me greatly as I join a hardworkin­g and committed team of profession­als,” said Potter.

Potter earned an associate of science in business administra­tion from Adirondack Community College. His bachelor of science degree in business education is from the State University of New York College at Oneonta.

In May 2000 he graduated cum laude with his master’s in education: educationa­l leadership from Massachuse­tts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Mass. He holds certificat­ions as a New York State permanent school district administra­tor and New York State permanent business education.

BOCES District Superinten­dent James Dexter, who coordinate­d the search on behalf of the district, said, “The Mechanicvi­lle Board of Education conducted a thorough and rigorous process. I would like to thank all of the members of the community who participat­ed in the superinten­dent search community survey that guided the board in identifyin­g the characteri­stics and traits for the next superinten­dent.”

“The board kept the best interests of the students in mind throughout the process and found the candidate who best fits their ideals and district’s needs. The Board put considerab­le time and effort into the search process and I would like to commend them for a fine job and great outcome,” he said.

Mechanicvi­lle school board President Marlene Tierney said, “Bruce is a proven leader with the experience and vision necessary to continue and advance academic excellence in our district. In addition to his qualificat­ions, his enthusiasm and ‘continuous improvemen­t’ mindset is a perfect fit for Mechanicvi­lle. In a field of talented applicants, Bruce stood out as the best choice for our district and community.”
