SUNNY SUNDAYS: Sunny Sundays are your opportunity to take a safe glimpse at the sun. Educators from the Dudley Observatory at the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci) will operate their 14” telescope inside the roll-top roof observatory, allowing visitors to safely look at the sun and search for sunspots. Other objects such as the moon and planets may also be visible. In the event of poor weather, there will be hands-on activities indoors instead. 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., 15 Nott Terrace Heights, Schenectady. BAKE SALE: The Galway Lioness Club Of Lions District 20W will hold a Bake Sale at the Village Of Galway Memorial Day In The Park Event. This Event will be held on Monday, May 27th, starting at 9:00 A.M. in the Village Of Galway Park located at the Village Intersection Of Sacandaga Road, also known as Route 147, and Galway Road. The Galway Lioness Club will also be selling their Galway Lioness Cookbook at the Park Event. Proceeds from the Bake Sale and Lioness Cookbook Sale will benefit the Galway Lioness Club Community Fund which also includes the Lioness Crisis Fund. The Park Event will also feature a variety of community activities. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Village of Galway. The Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. and features vintage and current fire trucks, tractors, floats and more.
BOOK SALE: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Behind the library at 5264 Sacandaga Rd., Galway. (Friends of the Library members only 8:30-9 a.m. If you’re not a member, you can join then for $5 and get a free book.) The sale is a fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Galway Public Library which raises money for library expenditures that are not included in the general operating budget. Books are handily arranged by category, with signs to identify each. CDs and books on CD/tape may also be sold. This book sale is part of the Galway Village’s Memorial Day observance in the Galway Village Park. The event includes a parade, a plant sale, face painting, ceramics sale, lively performance, several food vendors, as well as promotional and educational displays by local organizations and churches. IRISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM: Place Names in Ireland, Two Rivers Gaelic League, 7 p.m., 370 Broadway, Albany. Two Rivers Gaelic League will discuss the complexity of place names in Ireland. Many place names can trace their ancestry to three language families: Gaelic, English and Viking, with many names being “lost in translation!” A fascinating look at meaning and the importance of names in historical geography. CANAL: The Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site welcome Thomas Grasso to discuss the Geology of the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley: Hudson River to Little Falls at their Tuesday, May 28 meeting, beginning at 6:30pm in the Enders House on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter, adjacent to the Visitor Center.Grasso will discuss the bedrock and ice age geologic history of the region, and how this long and complex natural history affected human history by controlling the route of the canal and the obstacles that had to be overcome. Some local quarries that supplied stone for locks and aqueducts will be mentioned. Grasso, President Emeritus of the Canal Society of New York State, was society President for nearly forty years until his retirement in 2016. He was President of Inland Waterways International, based in the UK, from 2002 to 2010. Tom taught in and chaired the Geosciences Department at Monroe Community College in Rochester from 1968 to 1999 and has authored many articles and publications on New York State and European geology and canals for both the peer review and general audience press. There will be a brief Friends Group meeting prior to the presentation. This is a free event open to the public. Refreshments will be served. PROGRAM: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is excited to offer a Tractor and Farm Safety Course on Friday, May 31st hosted by Hudson River Tractor in Schaghticoke (11853 New York 40 Schaghticoke, NY 12154). This program is geared for adult audiences. Statistics show that farming and operating equipment is a hazardous and dangerous endeavor. Help yourself reduce the risks of an accident and attend this informative evening session. Friday, June 7 FREE MOVIES IN THE PARK: Free movies in Wiswall Park are back for the twelfth summer in a row, presented by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association, as part of its monthly First Friday activities. The series begins on June 7 (rain date June 8) with “Hotel Transylvania 3”. All films are family-friendly. The movies are projected onto the wall of the adjacent Front Street Deli building on Front Street in the village and begin at approximately dusk (8:30-8:45 pm). Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Movie snacks will be available. Before the movies, families are encouraged to stroll to downtown shops, restaurants, museums and other venues participating in First Friday.
