Pink Sheet celebrates 130th year
The quintessential guide to the Saratoga Race Course — the famous “Pink Sheet” — will celebrate its 130th year of print when this racing season opens July 11.
The Pink Sheet, inserted within the Saratogian newspaper, details everything a trackgoer could possibly need for a day at the races. It gets its name for the distinctive pink-colored paper it’s printed on.
“When people come to the track, they’re looking for the Pink Sheet. They’re looking for the Pink Sheet for its information, they’re looking for the Pink Sheet for its color, its content, and also, they know where to get it because they’re always looking for our Pink Sheet kids,” said Stan Hudy, longtime Saratogian sportswriter.
“It’s something that’s unique to Saratoga, and the Saratogian,” Hudy said. “It’s something that the publication is very proud of.”
Within its pink pages are horse racing news and articles, but more importantly, the pickers. Five horse racing experts weigh in on their favorites for that week’s races. The expert prognosticators are four named experts and one “Wise Owl.”
“That individual, when he first started making selections for us, worked for a financial institution. He had approval to make the picks, but he couldn’t use his name,” Hudy explains.
The other three handicappers include former Saratogian writers Sam Hollingsworth and Andrew Champagne, as well as horse racing expert Liam Durbin and racehorse owner Dan Feiss.
“There’s a lot of different talent, a lot of different takes, a lot of different systems in place there, so everyone gets a chance to really get a wide variety of selections,” Hudy said.
The Pink Sheet’s unique distribution strategy harkens back to the 19th century, when newsboys would stand on city corners shouting headlines to passersby. Similarly, the Saratogian employs “Pink Sheet Kids” who take to the track on race days, decked out in pink shirts and hats, to sell Pink Sheets to racegoers with their booming young voices.
It’s the Bible for those looking for the inside scoop.
