Pink Sheet cel­e­brates 130th year

The quin­tes­sen­tial guide to the Saratoga Race Course — the fa­mous “Pink Sheet” — will cel­e­brate its 130th year of print when this rac­ing sea­son opens July 11.

The Pink Sheet, in­serted within the Sarato­gian news­pa­per, de­tails ev­ery­thing a track­goer could pos­si­bly need for a day at the races. It gets its name for the dis­tinc­tive pink-colored pa­per it’s printed on.

“When peo­ple come to the track, they’re look­ing for the Pink Sheet. They’re look­ing for the Pink Sheet for its in­for­ma­tion, they’re look­ing for the Pink Sheet for its color, its con­tent, and also, they know where to get it be­cause they’re al­ways look­ing for our Pink Sheet kids,” said Stan Hudy, long­time Sarato­gian sports­writer.

“It’s some­thing that’s unique to Saratoga, and the Sarato­gian,” Hudy said. “It’s some­thing that the pub­li­ca­tion is very proud of.”

Within its pink pages are horse rac­ing news and ar­ti­cles, but more im­por­tantly, the pick­ers. Five horse rac­ing ex­perts weigh in on their fa­vorites for that week’s races. The expert prog­nos­ti­ca­tors are four named ex­perts and one “Wise Owl.”

“That in­di­vid­ual, when he first started mak­ing se­lec­tions for us, worked for a fi­nan­cial in­sti­tu­tion. He had approval to make the picks, but he couldn’t use his name,” Hudy ex­plains.

The other three hand­i­cap­pers in­clude for­mer Sarato­gian writ­ers Sam Hollingswo­rth and An­drew Cham­pagne, as well as horse rac­ing expert Liam Durbin and race­horse owner Dan Feiss.

“There’s a lot of dif­fer­ent tal­ent, a lot of dif­fer­ent takes, a lot of dif­fer­ent systems in place there, so every­one gets a chance to re­ally get a wide va­ri­ety of se­lec­tions,” Hudy said.

The Pink Sheet’s unique dis­tri­bu­tion strat­egy harkens back to the 19th cen­tury, when news­boys would stand on city cor­ners shout­ing head­lines to passersby. Sim­i­larly, the Sarato­gian em­ploys “Pink Sheet Kids” who take to the track on race days, decked out in pink shirts and hats, to sell Pink Sheets to race­go­ers with their boom­ing young voices.
