AMERICAN COMMUNITY: In Our Name Initiative and MLK Saratoga have teamed up to sponsor another “Conversation to Build an Inclusive American Community” on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at 1 PM at Caffé Lena. The topic to be discussed is Wrongful Convictions with a focus on the tremendous personal, social and emotional costs of wrongful convictions for innocent people and their families. Cost is $8 (age 13 and over), $4 (children 5-12), free (children under 5). THE WAY WE WERE CAR SHOW: The 17th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show is Coming in October! The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association (BSBPA) is pleased to announce plans for the 17th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show to be held Sunday, October 13, 2019 from 9 am-4 pm on Front Street in Ballston Spa. The rain date will be October 20. Front Street will be blocked off from Milton Avenue past the Old Iron Springs to accommodate car exhibits and vendors. In addition to food and merchandise vendors, the show will again feature a “Kids Zone”, located by the Old Iron Springs, which will feature free children’s activities. The car show is a judged show and several trophies will be awarded, including Best of Show, Mayor’s Choice, Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Stock, Oldest Vehicle plus the top 3 in specified categories. Judging begins at 9 am with trophies awarded at 3:30 pm. The event is free to spectators. Exhibitors can pre-register by September 30, 2019 for $15 per car or $20 the day of show. All proceeds will benefit BSBPA community activities. Dash plaques will be given to the first 400 cars registered and the first 200 cars registered will receive car show souvenirs. TROY CHOWDERFEST: 13th Annual Troy ChowderFest, Sunday, October 13, noon to 4 pm, Monument Square & throughout Troy. SOCIETY MEETING: The Town of Greenfield Historical Society will hold its October meeting on Tuesday the 15th at 7:00pm at the Greenfield Community Center, 25 Wilton Road. Our speakers will be Dave and Diane Allen, who will tell the story of how they created an organic lavender farm, Lavenlair Farm, near Whitehall, N.Y. on rolling farmland with an old stone farmhouse dating from 1820. Wednesday, Oct. 16 SUFFRAGETTE MOVEMENT PRESENTATION: The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County, along with the Saratoga Springs Public Library will present “The Unfinished Work of the Woman’s Suffrage Movement” on Wednesday, October 16th at 7 pm at the Saratoga Springs Library, The program by Sally Roesch Wagner, a nationally recognized lecturer and author of The Women’s Suffrage Movement, is one that gives voice to the unsung women who helped shape the suffrage movement, including African American suffragists who faced racism within the movement, and Iroquois women whose society influenced suffragists. You’ll hear stories of the well-known suffragists, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, as well as accounts of those often overlooked because of their race, from Native American women to African American suffragists like Ida B. Wells and the three Forten sisters. In advance of the 2020 centennial of the 19th amendment, the suffragists’ concerns for equality, social justice and voting rights remain as pertinent today as ever. This program was funded in part by Humanities New York with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM: Bernard Ouimet, President of La Fédération Franco Américaine du NY, will give a presentation on “The Battle of the Plains of Abraham”. Mr. Ouimet, a native of Quebec, will speak on the reasons for the French and Indian War and its most important battle, that took place at the Plains of Abraham. The discussion will also look at the strengths and weaknesses of the British and the French, and the reasons why the French lost the battle. Thursday, Oct. 17 TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL: The 24th annual Touched by an Angel fundraising event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, 6-9 p.m., at Canfield Casino, located in Congress Park in Saratoga Springs. The evening will feature a wide variety of food tastings provided by 18 local restaurants. Guests will be able to sample elegant, savory and sweet food stations, along with appetizers and desserts. Guests will also enjoy complimentary wine, beer, Saratoga Water, and a signature drink. There will be several great raffles. Saratoga Photobooth will be on hand. SOUPAPALOOZA: On Saturday, October 19, 2019, Long Shadows Farm and ACCT Naturally will hold a unique fall fundraiser, Soupapalooza, at Long Shadows Farm in Cambridge, NY. The day starts with a Fall Farm Festival at 2 PM featuring pony rides, wagon rides, demonstrations and other fun farm activities. The main event, Soupapalooza, starts at 4 PM. Local restaurants and chefs bring their best soup for you to sample. Patrons then vote for their favorite and eat a bowl with great bread and other lite fare. There will be a silent auction, music by Deena Chappell and Argyle Brewery will on be tap. All proceeds benefit two charitable organizations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating horses and placing them in programs for veterans, first responders, teens and women.
