GOURD DESIGN: Bird Feeders with Tim Sauter. Friday November 8, 9am-4pm. Tuition $105. Member Tuition $85. Materials fee $50. This course teaches participan­ts how to make a natural Gourd Bird Feeder. During the introducti­on, numerous examples of raw and finished gourds will be shown. The first part of the class will be devoted to preparatio­n and planning, and the cleaning and preparatio­n of both interior and exterior surface of the gourd will be covered in detail. Various tools and materials will be used, including scouring pads, steel wool, power drills and saws, Dremel tools, scrapers, sanding materials and more. Students will cut out and sand down one to four large openings in the upper half of their gourd. After a rigorous interior scraping preparatio­n of the gourd, numerous painting and drawing techniques will be discussed and demonstrat­ed, including wet and dry brush, sponge, stencil and others. After the base is dry, students will decorate their own gourds. Once complete, the gourds will be coated with polyuretha­ne and made ready to hang. CREATE YOUR OWN CUTTING BOARD: Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board with Frank Friday & Saturday, November 8 & 9, 2 half days. 9am-12pm. Tuition $105. Member Tuition $85. Materials fee $50. Come create a beautiful 12-18” hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sappala, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a jointer, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an “ear” woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporat­es a chain weave woven with dyed round reed in the student’s choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a hand-painted ceramic accent embellishe­s the basket in coordinati­ng colors with holiday themes. Do you love the different designs you see in handmade soap? Then come to this advanced workshop and learn various swirling techniques that will take your plain bar of soap to the next level. Painting: Scarves with Nan Travers. Sunday November 10, 9am-4pm. Tuition $105. Member Tuition $85. Materials fee $45. Painting silk is an exciting and magical process. First silk is stretched on a frame and then dyes are applied using paint brushes and other techniques. The colors develop right before your eyes along the beautiful surface of the silk. You will learn different applicatio­n techniques, first with a sampler and then with scarves and/or fabric. Students will be mixing their colors from the primary colors and black and will complete the process by steam setting the dyes. All work is done on silk provided by the instructor and each student will make two scarves. NOTE: Additional scarves will be available at an extra cost for those who would like to make more than two.
