BRAHMS REQUIEM: Brahms Requiem – Burnt Hills Oratorio Society, Sunday, November 10, 2019, 4pm. The Spa Little Theater, 19 Roosevelt Drive, Saratoga Springs. Don’t miss this rare performanc­e of The Brahms Requiem, a soulstirri­ng choral masterpiec­e. Featured soloists are soprano Rachel Mikol form Opera Saratoga Young Artist Program and baritone Woodrow Bynum. The Burnt Hills Oratorio Society (BHOS) is a dedicated community of singing musicians from around the Capital District that produces highly artistic and diverse choral performanc­es under the direction of William Jon Gray, a nationally recognized choral director. MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY BASH: TJ’s Flightline Pub in Glenville, NY is set to host the 5th Annual Marine Corps Birthday Bash on November 10, 2019. The celebrator­y evening begins at 7:00 P.M. and will feature several notable guests, including Iwo Jima Veterans from the local Capital Region. Every person is invited to attend the festivitie­s; there is no entrance fee! However, donations will be accepted to support the supportive, lifechangi­ng Wounded Warriors programs at STRIDE Adaptive Sports. The ceremonial cake cutting is scheduled to take place at 8:00 P.M. and the oldest and youngest Marines in attendance will also be recognized during this time. This special occasion is the perfect opportunit­y to learn more about the meaningful experience­s of those who have generously served our country. SILK PAINTING: Silk Painting: Scarves with Nan Travers. Sunday November 10, 9am4pm. Tuition $105. Member Tuition $85. Materials fee $45. Painting silk is an exciting and magical process. First silk is stretched on a frame and then dyes are applied using paint brushes and other techniques. The colors develop right before your eyes along the beautiful surface of the silk. You will learn different applicatio­n techniques, first with a sampler and then with scarves and/or fabric. Students will be mixing their colors from the primary colors and black and will complete the process by steam setting the dyes. All work is done on silk provided by the instructor and each student will make two scarves. NOTE: Additional scarves will be available at an extra cost for those who would like to make more than two. RUGS FROM RAGS: Rugs from Rags with Caroline Dvorak. Sunday November 10, 12pm-4pm. Tuition $80. Member Tuition $60. Materials fee $10. Fabric remnants will be used to make a rug. Students will have a choice of making a “Sock Rug”, using loopers from a sock factory, or making a Rag Rug using strips of fabric remnants or clothing. No weaving experience is necessary. The looms are dressed and ready to go, all you need to bring is your creative spirit and leave with a finished one-of-a-kind rag rug. Learn basic 19th Century American tinsmithin­g from a master tinsmith. This class will introduce you to and teach you about all the tools, forming stakes, swedges and handoperat­ed machines used in a well-equipped 19th-Century tin shop. You will be shown how to do basic layout work, cutting, forming, assembly and soldering. Complete both a finger candle stick and a wall sconce by the end of class.
