CHAMBER MIXER: The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce will meet for their November Orientation & Mixer at Saratoga Eagle Sales & Service, 45 Duplainville Rd., Saratoga Springs on Wednesday, November 20th. Join your fellow chamber members for an evening of networking while enjoying food and drinks as we welcome in the holiday season. Immediately before the mixer there will be a member orientation, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The mixer will run from 5:00 to 6:30 right after. Cost is $5 to attend. CENSUS MEETUP: Three organizations sponsor U.S. Census informational event - The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will host Lisa Moore, assistant regional census manager of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Partnership Program, at a Meet Up on Wednesday, Nov. 20. INDEPENDENT LIVING: A program on independent living with aging vision will be held on Wednesday Nov 20th at 10 a.m. in the Clifton Park Halfmoon Library. Lisa Jordan, Coordinator of Outreach Services and Marketing, Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany (NABA) will discuss the four leading causes of vision loss in older adults, early warning signs, adaptive support strategies and available resources including vision rehabilitation and adaptive aids. An activity to simulate the changes in vision will be part of the class to better understand what your spouse, friend or loved one is experiencing. The program is presented through the Albany Guardian Society and is co-sponsored by the Library, Shenendehowa Neighbors Connecting and the Senior Services Committee of CAPTAIN/CHS as part of a series of programs of interest to area seniors. Hudson River School and its impact on the conservation movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Stenshorn is the director of interpretive programs at the Albany Institute of History and Art. HISTORY LECTURE: The Saratoga County Historical Society, as part of their Long Room Lecture Series, will present a program entitled “Historical Fiction and Fictional History: Translating the Past in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans” on Thursday, November 21 th at 7 PM at Brookside Museum, 6 Charlton Street, Ballston Spa. Elaina Frulla, of SUNY Albany will discuss how the time Cooper spent in Ballston Spa amidst the socio-political climate of the 1820’s influenced his depiction of the heroes and villains of The Last of the Mohicans, set during the French and Indian War, 70 years earlier. Historically many children, particularly in improvised or rural areas, did not have access to commercially produced toys, either because they were not sold locally or because their families could not afford to purchase them. Nonetheless, these children often did have wonderful toys to play with because someone in their family or immediate social circle was able to make toys for them. Participants in this course will have the opportunity to create one or two (depending on the complexity) children’s toys from wood and finish with a safe food-grade preservative. The instructor will provide several different templates to make animal or vehicle designs. Students can also bring their own ideas for designs. Herbs can transform everyday foods into delicious meals! The difference between spaghetti sauce and plain old tomato sauce is oregano and a variety of other

herbs. One of the simplest ways to use herbs is to add them to our food. How many herbs do you use in your cooking? We will take a look at the herbs most often used in cooking along with the importance of taste and techniques that enhance the flavor of our foods. We will taste individual herbs and discuss which herbs pair well with what foods. This will give students the inspiration and confidence to add them to any of their meals at home! Once you learn how to create one of these magnificent lampshades you will feel like you’re out in the deep woods while you sit reading in your comfortable chair at night. The warmth and beauty of the light produced from the botanicals when the light is turned on is magical! This class is divided into two half-day sessions. The goal is to bring nature to life. You will create two lampshades using botanicals that can be found all around us in the Adirondacks, including cedar and ferns. These botanicals will be pressed, preserving their natural beauty. They can be admired only when the lamp is turned on and are hidden when the lamp is off. In addition to a shade, you will create two nightlights.
