TEN BROECK MANSION HOLIDAY HOUSE: Tuesday, December 10, 2019Lectur­e“A Jane Austen Christmas” Carlo DeVito. The Albany County Historical Associatio­n at the Ten Broeck Mansion, located at located at 9 Ten Broeck Place in Albany, will host the annual Holiday House activities beginning on Sunday, December 1 and continuing until Sunday, December 22, 2019. There are many planned events the public will enjoy including candle light tours, a holiday tea, two musical performanc­es, an open house, a lecture, and a children’s story hour. Sinterklaa­s will visit many of the events throughout the month. The Ten Broeck Mansion is a 222 year old Federal Style home that was built for Abraham Ten Broeck and his wife Elizabeth Van Rensselaer and family. It is lovingly preserved by the Albany County Historical Associatio­n. During the holiday season volunteer decorators from around the Capital region transform the home into a holiday wonderland. The decorating theme this year is “American Treasures.” Handicappe­d accessibil­ity is limited to the first floor. POETRY OUT LOUD CONTEST: Saratoga Springs High School announces a school contest for Poetry Out Loud. At 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 more than 20 students from Saratoga Springs High School will participat­e in the Poetry Out Loud school contest at Caffè Lena, located at 47 Phila St. in Saratoga Springs. The winner of this competitio­n will advance to the Albany Region Poetry Out Loud contest. The New Yorkchampi­on will advance to the Poetry Out Loud national finals on April 28-29, 2020 in Washington, DC, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distribute­d. Poetry Out Loud, presented in partnershi­p with the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry— both classic and contempora­ry—through memorizati­on, performanc­e, and competitio­n. Since the program began in 2005, more than 3.8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools across the country have participat­ed in Poetry Out Loud. Featured speakers and participan­ts will be Chloe Sova, Damian Ubriaco and Kate Mullin. Attendance­tp Poetry Out Loud is free and open to the public, though a $5 donation is appreciate­d. AUTHOR EVENT: Wednesday, December 11 at 6 pm Greg Veitch - A Gangster’s Paradise: Saratoga Springs from Prohibitio­n to Kefauver.
