TEN BROECK MANSION HOLIDAY HOUSE: Tuesday, December 10, 2019- Lecture“A Jane Austen Christmas” Carlo DeVito. The Albany County Historical Association at the Ten Broeck Mansion, located at located at 9 Ten Broeck Place in Albany, will host the annual Holiday House activities beginning on Sunday, December 1 and continuing until Sunday, December 22, 2019. There are many planned events the public will enjoy including candle light tours, a holiday tea, two musical performances, an open house, a lecture, and a children’s story hour. Sinterklaas will visit many of the events throughout the month. The Ten Broeck Mansion is a 222 year old Federal Style home that was built for Abraham Ten Broeck and his wife Elizabeth Van Rensselaer and family. It is lovingly preserved by the Albany County Historical Association. During the holiday season volunteer decorators from around the Capital region transform the home into a holiday wonderland. The decorating theme this year is “American Treasures.” Handicapped accessibility is limited to the first floor. POETRY OUT LOUD CONTEST: Saratoga Springs High School announces a school contest for Poetry Out Loud. At 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 more than 20 students from Saratoga Springs High School will participate in the Poetry Out Loud school contest at Caffè Lena, located at 47 Phila St. in Saratoga Springs. The winner of this competition will advance to the Albany Region Poetry Out Loud contest. The New Yorkchampion will advance to the Poetry Out Loud national finals on April 28-29, 2020 in Washington, DC, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed. Poetry Out Loud, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry— both classic and contemporary— through memorization, performance, and competition. Since the program began in 2005, more than 3.8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools across the country have participated in Poetry Out Loud. Featured speakers and participants will be Chloe Sova, Damian Ubriaco and Kate Mullin. Attendancetp Poetry Out Loud is free and open to the public, though a $5 donation is appreciated. AUTHOR EVENT: Wednesday, December 11 at 6 pm - Greg Veitch - A Gangster’s Paradise: Saratoga Springs from Prohibition to Kefauver. The author, former Saratoga Springs Police Chief - will discuss his new book, including tales of bootlegging, gambling and corruption from the town’s past. This event is free and open to the public and will take place at Northshire Bookstore at 424 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. HOLIDAY MIXER: The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce will meet for their largest networking mixer of the year, the Holiday Mixer, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019, at the Saratoga Springs City Center, 522 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. On hand will be hundreds of Chamber members looking to build connections while enjoying food and drinks.
