STODDARD TALK: On Satur­day, De­cem­ber 14 at 2 pm, Chap­man Mu­seum Di­rec­tor, Ti­mothy Wei­d­ner will present a talk en­ti­tled, “From the Moun­tains to the Sea: S. R. Stoddard’s Pho­tos of the Hud­son River.” The pro­gram will take place at the mu­seum, and is free and open to the pub­lic. Seat­ing is lim­ited. Seneca Ray Stoddard is best known for his 19th C. pho­to­graphs of the Adiron­dacks, taken over a span of twenty-five years. Among the thou­sands of im­ages are many that he took of the Hud­son River near its source in the High Peaks, as well as pho­tos of the falls where the river ex­ited the moun­tains. Stoddard also pho­tographed the river’s in­ter­est­ing sites as he trav­eled be­tween Glens Falls and New York City by train and steam­boat, in­clud­ing the Hud­son High­lands and the Pal­isades. The talk will fea­ture im­ages selected from the mu­seum’s col­lec­tion of more than 3000 Stoddard pho­tos. The pro­gram is pre­sented in con­nec­tion with the trav­el­ing Smith­so­nian ex­hi­bi­tion Wa­ter/Ways, on view at the Chap­man Mu­seum through Jan­uary 5, 2020.
