RPI’s Mahoney earns All-American honors

TROY, N.Y. » Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) student-athlete Patrick Mahoney has once again been honored by the National Associatio­n of Basketball Coaches (NABC), this time earning the prestigiou­s recognitio­n as a 2020 Division III All-America First Team honoree. The junior forward is one of eight individual­s chosen.

The NABC East Region Player of the Year and an All-District First Team selection, Mahoney (Ossining, NY / Fordham Prep.) started all 29 games for the Engineers, averaging 15.1 points and 5.7 rebounds in 28.4 minutes. He also had 44 assists, 27 steals and four blocked shots while helping the team to a school record 24 wins (24-5) and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

He led the team in field goal

attempts (347), field goals made (161) and scoring average (15.1), while ranking second in free throws attempted (83) and rebounding average (5.7). He had at least 15 points in 14 games with eight contests of at least 20 points. He was the team’s top scorer nine times, including at Hobart College (20 points), vs. Ithaca College (26) and against Union College in the Liberty League Tournament Semifinals (19).

Mahoney had team-highs in rebounds eight times, including against Ithaca twice with 11 and 10 boards, respective­ly. He had at least five caroms in 17 games, registerin­g four double-doubles (Anna Maria College, Ithaca, RIT, Ithaca), and registered multiple assists in 13 games. He had at least two steals in nine contests.

A business and management major, Mahoney was a three-time Liberty League Performer of the Week who went on to be named to the All-Conference First Team and the Liberty League Player of the Year. He was also honored as a D3hoops. com All-East Region First Team selection.

in addition to recording the most victories in a campaign, Rensselaer also had the most conference wins in a season (17-1 in Liberty League) and tied the school mark for consecutiv­e victories (18). RPI, which was third in the nation in scoring defense (60.9 points allowed per game), earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round for just the second time in school history.

As a sophomore, Mahoney earned All-League Honorable Mention after averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in 29.7 minutes per game. He also had 38 assists, 10 steals and three blocks as a starter in each of the team’s 25 contests. He had at least 20 points four times in helping the Engineers, who are coached by Mark Gilbride, reach the conference tournament.

Mahoney played 24 games as a freshman, averaging 3.7 points with 51 rebounds and 17 assists in 11.8 minutes per game.
