BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. » Saratoga County Historical Society is debuting a new Experts Next Door virtual event series.

The first Experts Next Door event, a virtual beer tasting, will take place at 7 p.m. on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21 online via Zoom.

A live, interactive critique of specific beers will be led by Michael Shaffer, operator of The Real McCoy Beer Co.’s tap room at the 1804 Doubleday House in Ballston Spa.

Shaffer has selected four beers for the event, which can be purchased at area supermarkets. The first is Paradox’s Bohemian-style Pilsner produced in its Schroon Lake brewery, followed by Troy-based Brown’s Brewing Company’s Joann IPA, which is described as juicy and smooth with Mosaic and Amarillo hops. The third will be Lakewood’s Southern Tier IPA, which sports a copper color and lightly floral, citrus, and pine aroma. The final selection will be Northway Brewing Company’s Barkeater Chocolate Cherry Stout, a milk/sweet stout.

Participants are asked to buy samples of each beverage and Zoom in from the comfort of their homes.

The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Saratoga County History Center, located at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. Tickets for the event are available online at the Brookside Museum website or Saratoga County Historical Society’s Facebook page. Donations with a minimum $5 fee are requested to support the activities of the history center. A link to the Zoom event will be emailed out to those who have purchased tickets.

The Experts Next Door series of workshops and discussions will continue throughout the summer.

The second event will feature Kathleen Royka of the Thymely Herb group, who will provide a workshop on gardening with herbs at 7 p.m. on July 9.

Then, Skidmore College professor Dr. Tillman Nechtman will follow with a discussion at 7 p.m. on July 23 about his research on Britain’s use of the ocean as a world power.

Next, New York’s role in early 19th century religious revivals will be explored by Dr. Jennifer Dorsey of Siena College at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.
