4th Annual Ballston Spa Birdhouse Competition underway
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. » The Ballston Spa community is getting ready for spring by decorating birdhouses for the 4th Annual Ballston Spa Birdhouse Competition.
The contest theme this year is Ballston Spa is Home.
“We have an incredibly rich history and we are working hard to make it a better future for our children,” a press release for the event said.
“COVID has not slowed us down one bit,” event organizer Mark Blech said in the release. “We’re following the guidelines and making sure everything is being handled in a safe and no contact manner, but we are determined to keep this favorite village program up and running,”
Like every year, there are two categories of birdhouses to enter. The first is the Build From Scratch from scratch category, where individuals or families create a birdhouse from materials they have around the house.
“Over the years, entries have been wild and amazing creations,” Blech continued. “We’ve had birdhouses carved into faces, ones to look like cats and Lincoln Log creations; what people have come up with is always amazing.”
The second category involves picking up a premade birdhouse and decorating it anyway you want. Paint, glue, glitter, popsicle sticks, buttons etc., are all fair game in making these birdhouses a participant’s own expression.
The free competition, made possible by donations from Curtis Lumber and the Village of Ballston Spa, is open to everyone, with no age limits. Participants do not need to be Ballston Spa residents.
Competitors can request a free pre-made birdhouse for contactless outdoor pick-up by contacting Mark Blech at marklouisco@gmail.com.
All birdhouses need to be returned before April 1.
