NO REGRETS
For Schuylerville QB Owen Sherman, this season is about more than football
SCHUYLERVILLE, NY » It’s been well over a year since Schuylerville played for the Class B state championship at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. It was a run that the Horses could only dream of replicating.
This season isn’t about making any deep runs in the state tournament, but the relatively young Horses team may get that opportunity again soon enough.
“I would just say that we need to take the opportunity and run with it,” said quarterback Owen Sherman. “You don’t know when the team could possibly shut down or any of that. Once we go out there, we just need to play hard and we can’t have any regrets.”
Schuylerville got off to a good start when they defeated Mechanicville in their season opener 38-0 last week. This Saturday, they will play their first home game of 2021 when they host Johnstown.
For Sherman, a key difference to this season was the preparation coming in, as well as the weather.
“I think it’s not having double sessions in the summer and then starting the season,” Sherman said when asked
what’s different about playing football in the spring. “When we came in to start practice the weather was pretty cold and it was all just unusual. People have pretty much gotten used to the masks by now though.”
Sherman, a junior, is coming right out of basketball season and will continue to stay busy throughout the spring. When the football season comes to a close, he will step right back onto the baseball field.
“We had a couple football meetings and practices during basketball season, but we’re focused the season that we were in, at least we focused on that the most,” he said. “I think it conditioned all of us who played basketball. It really was just fun to be able to get out there and play. There wasn’t a lot of down time since there were so many games, we had to get down and stay focused.”
The quarterback plays forward on the basketball team and shortstop on the baseball team and will pitch when called upon.
For now, he is staying focused on football, but he’s planning on breaking out the bat and glove soon enough.
“I haven’t started anything with baseball yet. We’ll probably get there towards the end of the season, but I always stay in contact with the coaches to see what I can work on.”
He made no secrets about the sport he’s hoping to get the opportunity to play in college.
“I like football the best. I think it’s a great team game. It’s about eleven guys going in and working together to accomplish a goal. I just love everything about it.”
This season offers Sherman the opportunity to play with his brother, Lukas, who is a freshman. They two didn’t take long to get thing going, as they’ve already connected for a 42yard touchdown in their first game - which occurred as time expired to end the first half.
“Luke, my brother, he made a great play and we have a great connection. He’s shifty, he has great hands and he’s a good player all-around. It’s great that we have him on the team,” Sherman said.
“For me, this season is really just about having fun, more than ever, because you never know when the season could end.”
