HVCC’s Teaching Gallery reopens with ‘What We Looked At’

- Staff report

TROY, N.Y. » “What We Looked At,” an exhibition of work from the collections of Fine Art and Digital Media faculty members, reopens the Teaching Gallery at Hudson Valley Community College that’s offered only virtual exhibits since the pandemic-mandated closing in March 2020.

“What We Looked At” opened Oct. 22 without a public reception and runs through Dec. 2. Gallery hours are open free to the public and visitors are required to wear masks while indoors on the Troy campus.

“As we again venture out to visit spaces and view collections of art works, this show brings those private moments of isolated viewing back to the social realm by gathering and sharing works from the faculty’s collections here in the now-open Teaching Gallery. It is a view into those months where what was on our walls was our solace, inspiration, comfort and context. What was on our walls was what we looked at,” Fine Arts Professor Thomas Lail writes in an introductory statement to this post-lockdown exhibit.

Fine Arts and Digital Media program faculty are lending artwork created by Scott Brodie, Dawn Clements, Barbara Ess, Nan Goldin, Susan Hartung, GC Haymes, Chelly Hegan, Naomi Lewis, Robert Longo, Laura Mandelson, Robert Motherwell, Lee Ranaldo and others to the exhibit.

Current gallery hours through Dec. 3 are Tuesdays — 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays — 11 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m.; Thursdays — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays — 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Teaching Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Administration Building. Visit www. hvcc.edu/teachinggallery or contact d.gardner@hvcc.edu for more information.

Exhibitions in The Teaching Gallery are installed and assisted by students enrolled in Gallery Management courses. The gallery is supported by the Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media Department, Cultural Affairs Program, and the college’s Foundation.
