SSPD swears in 14 new police officers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. » The Saratoga Springs Police Department recently had a swearing-in ceremony for 14 new officers.

Those members are Kevin Quigley, William “Cody” Marshall, Cody Hansen, Shannon Smith Jr., Alec Sparks, William Ferraro, Ryan Nicholson, Colleen Thompson, James “Oliver” Aldrich, James Bogdan, Michael Nadeau, Anthony Villano, John Alfano Jr., and Quinn Leffler.

Seven of the new members — Quigley, Marshall, Hansen, Smith, Sparks, Ferraro and Nicholson — will graduate from the academy in August. They were sworn in due to their previous ceremony being canceled due to COVID. These other seven — Thompson, Aldrich, Bogdan, Nadeau, Villano, Alfano and Leffler — will start their journey at the academy on July 25.

Friends and family, as well as Saratoga Springs Mayor Ron Kim, came from all across the Capital Region came to congratula­te the 14 new members.

“I was Commission­er of Public Safety about 15 years ago and this was a big deal because this was a really great opportunit­y to meet the families of the officers, who supported these individual­s for coming forward,” Kim said during the swearing-in ceremony.

Speaking to the officers being sworn in, Kim said, “You’ve selected a noble profession and a difficult job. You come into the profession at a difficult time and we ask very much of you, but I know that all of you are up to that task and I want to congratula­te all of you and welcome you to policing in Saratoga.”

Sgt. Angela McGovern introduced each new member, who went up on stage and then were pinned by someone special to them.

Quigley was pinned by Sgt. Dan Mullen. Marshall, Hansen, Smith, Sparks, Bogdan, and Villano were pinned by his mothers. Thompson, Aldrich, and Leffler were pinned by their fathers. Ferraro was pinned by his grandfathe­r. Nicholson was pinned by his girlfriend, while Alfano was pinned by his grandmothe­r.

After each of the new officers were pinned by loved ones, they hugged in celebratio­n for the new chapter in the new officers’ lives.

Each of the new four

teen members took an oath to uphold the standards and the law of Saratoga Springs before the ceremony was concluded.

Congratula­tions to Kevin Quigley, William “Cody” Marshall, Cody Hansen, Shannon Smith Jr., Alec Sparks, William Ferraro, Ryan Nicholson, Colleen Thompson, James “Oliver” Aldrich, James Bogdan, Michael Nadeau, Anthony Villano, John Alfano Jr., and Quinn Leffler. Saratoga Springs Police Department gained fourteen new officers that all have the drive to do what is best for Saratoga Springs.
