State parks in need of lifeguards
The Capital Region branch of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is looking for lifeguards for the 2024 season.
Lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying procedure — assessing candidates in CPR, water rescue, and swimming ability. There are four upcoming qualifiers currently scheduled: April 27, 9 am at Ballston Spa High School; May 11, 9 am at Ballston Spa High School; May 18, 9 am at Ballston Spa High School; and June 1, 9 am at Albany Academy.
New York State Parks Lifeguard requirements are among the most extensive statewide. Candidates must complete a lifeguard certification course through the Red Cross or other state-approved courses and successfully complete the parks lifeguard qualifier. The rigorous standards ensure that lifeguards, earning a competitive pay ranging from $20 to $24 per hour, possess the competence and skills to respond effectively to emergencies.
Regional Water Safety Coordinator Mike Trunkes, a former longtime Jones Beach State Park lifeguard himself, emphasizes the vital community service lifeguarding provides.
“You’ll make friends for life and feel confident you made a difference,” Trunkes said in a news release.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Regional Water Safety Coordinator Michael Trunkes at michael.trunkes@parks.ny.gov or call 518584-2000 Ext 252 for details. Information is also available at https://parks. ny.gov/employment/lifeguards/default. aspx. Positions for the 2024 Summer Season are open at Moreau Lake State Park, Saratoga Spa State Park, Grafton Lake State Park, Thompson Lake State Campground, and Mine Kill State Park.
