Ask the Designer
I need some inspiration. How can I decorate my sun room that opens up to the pool so that it will be pretty and inviting yet durable? I want it to be a casual room to entertain guests. Sincerely, Uninspired Dear Uninspired,
Since I don’t know your situation I will answer in general while using the specific room photographed here. This answer is applicable to a sun room, cabana or den that opens up to a lake or pool.
A room for entertaining should reflect a certain amount of formality, the style casual and playful but not juvenile. It should be an airy, inviting room designed around comfort and a lovely view of the pool or lake.
The terra cotta tile flooring was used in the room for its color and durability. The sisal rug stands up well to dripping bathers coming in to enjoy the comforts of the room.
The color palette should be light or bright and fun. This cabana offers a wonderful view of the watery aquamarine pool which makes salmon-pink a complimentary choice on the color wheel.
Lighting should be soft and indirect using lamps and ceiling up-lights. I much prefer lamp light to overhead lighting. There is no color without light so the room should be well lit.
Furnishings can be usual items used in your home or they could have a water theme. Just make sure they are water resistant. Throw in a bit of whimsy now and again to make the room playful, as in the monkey coffee table.
Live botanicals are a positive. Plants bring some softness to the room and create some repetition bringing the outdoors in.
Window treatments are optional. You may want to frame the windows with light drapes that are not meant to close or a charming cornice. You may also need shades to protect the room from the harsh sun.
His and her dressing rooms with personalized details would be ideal to adjoin the sun room if you have the space to make it happen. It’s nice to have everything needed at hand for someone to change clothes or shower after a dip in the lake.
