Home Makeover: Modern Flare

Small space made perfect down to the details

Having worked in all aspects of the business and traveled the world can make designing the perfect space an eye-opening experience. But when the designer is their own client, the attention to detail is amplified.

“Designing and remodeling a home is my passion,” said designer Greg Ainsworth. “This project is for myself — my toughest client because I'm so particular with every detail.”

When Greg found a cabin on the lake, what most people would have thought to “tear it down and rebuild” but he wanted to “bring it back to its glory.”

“It was a one bed, one bath, 689-square-foot cabin built in 1955 for about $16,000, with solid mahogany floor jousts,” he said. “It was in bad shape and grown up with brush and trees leaning on the house.”

After moving the laundry from under the house to a closet upstairs, he started work moving the sink to a vanity right outside the bathroom into an existing closet. The shower was expanded to make it full size.

He also plans to add a wall and make another bedroom with a wall of glass facing the beautiful view of the lake, he said.

“I went with gray tones and a bright orange for the color scheme, with modern flare,” he said. “This with all the beams works very well together.”

And recycling takes on a whole new meaning for him as he said he loves bringing in old pieces to give them new life.

“I use old pieces of furniture and fixtures to give them new life,” he said. “I paint them bright colors and polish the hardware and they look great.”

Greg said he has great people that he can depend on for his projects with Peter's Flooring and Paint as his goto for tile.

“They have an amazing selection of tile that compares to a large city and great customer service,” he said.

When Greg came to Brooks and Nan Clem of Peter's Flooring and Paint, Nan said he had great ideas.

“He chose a fabulous, gray gloss tile for the walls and accented with an orange dream glass,” she said. “And the Botany Bay Pebble shower floor provides both an organic and spa-like feel.”

Nan said that Peter's Flooring and Paint provided Greg with all the materials he needed to make his bathroom “both contemporary and unique, and that they strive to help everyone that walks through the doors achieve the look they want.

“If we don't have what you're looking for, we will find it for you,” she said.
