Finding the right designer for you

- Sandy Sutton

Dear Sandy,

I recently purchased a home on Lake Hamilton and it needs a lot of work done to it to bring it up to date and more functional as well as very attractive.

Your name keeps coming up, so I went to your website and see that you do excellent work. I have also noted in your ads that you have Allied ASID after your name. What exactly does that mean?

My question is that I need you to educate me on the difference between a decorator and a designer, and why are there such varied rates charged for the work they do?

This will be a large renovation and I want to know that I am working with a real professional. Thank you, Michael

Dear Michael,

Congratulations on your purchase of a lake home. It's like vacation time every day!

Let me start with the Allied ASID affiliation. This is the American Society of Interior Designers and there are only 24,000 members in the U.S. — pretty selective.

All members must adhere to the Society's code of ethics and professional conduct, ensuring the consumer respectful conduct when they hire an ASID member.

In order to be selected as a member they all have met rigorous standards. With a combination of accredited design education and/or full time work experience, this is what sets ASID designers apart from others in their field. I have been the recipient of numerous ASID awards and enjoy being kept informed of the latest in codes and laws for my state.

So, you might say that the difference between decorators and designers is their mindset. A designer goes far beyond the paint color and the fabrics. They see the space and determine how it is best utilized for safety, function and beauty. They are also keenly aware of the electrical and mechanical workings and knowledgeable about making the appropriate finish selections.

How a person in the design field charges for their services is really based on their experience, expertise and knowledge. As a consumer you will be working with someone to make design decisions that can either be fantastic or a costly mistake. Plan on hiring a professional that has the background and can produce for you!

Since you will be on the lake this summer, I want to share one of my favorite refreshing drinks. Enjoy!
