Hogs plate 2 in 10th, down Gators on road

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Michael Gunn broke a 1- all tie with a pinch- hit RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, leading Arkansas to a 3- 1 victory over Florida Sunday at Mckethan Stadium. The Razorbacks took the series 2- 1 over the Gators, ranked as highly as No. 2 in one poll, giving Arkansas its second Southeastern Conference road victory of the season.

Jake Wise began Arkansas’ rally by getting hit by a fullcount pitch to lead off the 10th. He moved to second on a Jacob Morris sacrifice bunt, to third on Tim Carver’s seeing- eye single and home on Gunn’s hit, which moved Carver over to third.

Dominic Ficociello then drove in Carver on his oneout grounder to pitcher Johnny Magliozzi. Magliozzi ( 4- 2) tried to turn a double play by going to second, but Ficociello beat out the relay to first.

Barrett Astin appeared for Arkansas ( 31- 13, 11- 10) in the bottom of the inning, recording a strikeout while picking up his seventh save of the season. Colby Suggs ( 4- 0) got the win, tossing 1 2- 3 innings of hitless relief.

Arkansas starter DJ Baxendale got no decision but was strong in 7 1- 3 innings. He struck out five with no walks while allowing five hits.

Baxendale was charged with one run by giving up a one- out single on his final batter faced in the eighth. Trent Daniel gave up a hit by pitch for his only batter faced, Suggs walked the bases loaded and Preston Tucker hit an RBI grounder to second to tie the game for Florida ( 33- 12, 12- 9).

The Gators stayed in the game because starter Jonathon Crawford and relievers Steven Rodriguez and Austin Maddox combined to strike out 12 through the first nine innings. Rodriguez and Maddox gave up only one hit between them.

Arkansas held a 1- 0 lead for most of the game because of a two- out RBI single by Bo Bigham in the top of the first. That followed Ficociello’s two- out double and Matt Reynolds getting hit by a pitch.

Carver led the Hogs by going 2- for- 4. Mike Zunino was 2- for- 4 with a stolen base for the Gators. Arkansas had two runners caught stealing while Florida got caught stealing to end the ninth.

Arkansas won Saturday’s game 5- 1 with four runs in the fifth inning. Florida won the series opener 3- 2, overcoming a two- run deficit.

The Razorbacks begin a twogame series with Missouri, next season a conference foe, at 6: 35 p. m. Tuesday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville. The series concludes at 3: 05 p. m. Wednesday.
