Retired major general touted
Arwood selected for Quartermaster Hall of Fame
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE – Retired U. S. Army Major Gen. Tom Arwood, was recently nominated and selected for induction into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame for his more than 30 years of service.
Arwood was nominated by Eugene L. Stillions Jr., also a retired major general. Arwood graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Army ROTC Program.
“Major Gen. Arwood served with distinction at every level of command and staff, up to and including the Corps Support Command, V Corps Staff, Army Material Command and the Department of the Army,” Stillions said.
“He had almost 12 years of command time, not counting special ( ad hoc) support missions. He was responsible for the direct support of our finest combat divisions as commander of a maintenance battalion, division support command and corps support command. During these command assignments, Major Gen. Arwood be- came well known to the senior officers throughout the Army as a ‘ can- do, will- do’ quartermaster.”
After 34 years of active service, Arwood and his wife, Peggy, retired to Hot Springs Village in 1993, where he has remained active in the community through a number of endeavors, including the Village Community Foundation, the Village Veterans Memorial Committee, Hot Springs Village Rotary Club, the Governmental Affairs Committee, Military Officers Association of America, the Saline County Economic Development Corporation and three years of service on the board of directors.
Arwood was the guest speaker at the March 30 Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans tribute as well as the Arkansas Freedom Fund golf tournament held at Diamante Country Club to raise funds for wounded warriors.
“Arwood’s leadership throughout his long military career, and in retirement, has earned him respect from members of other branches and improved the image of the Quartermaster Corps. He truly deserves to be in our Hall of Fame,” Stillions said.
Arwood received several letters of support for his nomination from other military officials, including Colin Powell. State Sen. William Sample and State Rep. John T. Vines.
Arwood’s military awards and decorations include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Humanity Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Overseas Service Medal, Vietnam Distinguished Unit Citation, Army Meritorious Unit Citation, German Cross in Gold ( presented by the Federal Republic of Germany), Army General Staff Badge, Parachutist’s Badge and Army Air Assault Badge.
