Mowry, Roachell take ASGA titles
MAUMELLE — Jean Mowry successfully defended the Arkansas State Golf Association Senior Women’s Match Play championship with a 1- up victory over Little Rock’s Debbie Diner on Thursday at Maumelle Country Club.
Mowry, of Hot Springs Village, was Arkansas Women’s Golf Association Super Senior Player of the Year from 20082010 before Hot Springs’ Pat Elliott claimed the title last year. The ASGA and AWGA hold separate circuits, the latter’s match- play championship scheduled next week at Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers and its stroke championship July 22- 24 at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village.
HSV player Grier Bennett lost 1- up to Lisa Varney in the ASGA women’s championship- flight consolation match Thursday, Bennett three- putting No. 18 after holding a three- stroke lead.
“I played really good until the last five holes,” said Bennett, playing her first tournament golf since April while a freshman at High Point University. Recently turned 19, and soon to depart for Honduras on a mission trip, Bennett said she would remember her strong start rather than her sputtering finish.
“You can’t dwell on one shot. Life goes on; the round goes on,” said Bennett, a two- time individual champion for backto- back Class 3A- winning teams at Jessieville High.
Bennett lost to Russellville veteran Julie Oxendine 2 up in the main draw. Conway’s Summar Roachell, a two- time state high- school overall champion, won the overall title with a 3- and- 2 victory over Megan Vaughn of Lake Village. Roachell won her semifinal match against defending champion Taylor Fisher, of Hot Springs.
