Hudnell ‘ leads by example’
Dear editor:
As I enjoy my cup of java this morning, and knowing that our City Manager Lance Hudnell has made his last local radio talk show appearance before he retires, I reflect on one incident between us that most affected me in a positive way.
It was a moment of humility from Lance and it clearly demonstrated to me what the phrase, “leadership by example,” really means.
For those who may not know, I have worked in the city Public Information department for the last six years. Early on in my employment, Lance heard the back end of a conversation between me and a city official that was mistakenly viewed as disrespecting the chain of command.
He pulled me aside later and sternly told me to never go behind his back again. Being a fairly new employee, and not wanting to risk further action, I chose not to attempt clarification at that moment.
The following morning, after getting clarification about the incident, he came to my desk and apologized profusely for jumping the gun and assuming the worst. That moment taught me a valuable lesson in humility that, to this day, I use as part of my benchmark for self- respect.
I may have forgotten exactly what he said to me that morning, but I will never forget how his actions that morning improved my outlook on life.
