Greenbrier, LH start fast in Shootout
LITTLE ROCK — Greenbrier emerged with the only perfect record during pool play in Friday’s eighth annual Shootout of the South 7- on- 7 passing tournament at Mighty Bluebird Complex.
The Class 5A Panthers finished 5- 0 to win Pool A, one of four pools for the 19 varsity teams competing.
“I’m pleasantly surprised,’ Greenbrier coach Randy Tribble said. ‘ But our kids played a lot better defense.’
Lake Hamilton won Pool B ( 4- 0- 1), Oklahoma City Heritage Hall won Pool C ( 4- 1) and El Dorado won Pool D ( 4- 1).
Greenbrier’s victories were over Class 4A Warren ( 28- 21), Norman, Okla. ( 32- 9), defending Class 7A champion Fayetteville ( 35- 33), Class 6A Russellville ( 28- 21) and Pulaski Academy JV ( 48- 29).
Tribble said he was particularly pleased with the play of senior quarterback Seth Peters, who was the state’s second- leading receiver last fall with 113 receptions.
Peters was a “really good eighth- grade quarterback,” Tribble said, but didn’t play as a ninth- grader because of an elbow injury.
Peters was the go- to receiver the last two years for record- setting quarterback Neal Burcham,
an incoming freshman at SMU.
“Seth had a good day,’ Tribble said. ‘ He’s getting better.”
Class 6A Lake Hamilton won four consecutive games following a 28- 28 tie with Class 5A Harrison.
Lake Hamilton beat Class 7A Little Rock Central 37- 35 on an interception ( worth two points) by sophomore Josh Nazario with approximately 30 seconds remaining in the 25- minute game. Central had won 11 consecutive 7- on- 7 games this summer.
“It’s competitive,’ Lake Hamilton coach Jerry Clay said. “I think anybody here can win this thing.”
El Dorado’s only loss was to Pulaski Academy ( 30- 29). The Class 5A Bruins are the two- time defending Shootout of the South champions. They also won last fall’s Class 4A state championship.
