‘ Multi- culturalism’ a reality
Dear editor:
The information age has arrived and we are seeing communication technology increasing with mind- boggling velocity. It’s a marvel that anyone can keep up with the rapidly developing technology. We are swamped with information and overwhelmed with high- tech gadgets that we find difficult to learn. No sooner do we grasp one device, then we find it replaced with something new.
Likewise, we must deal with the rapidly shifting moral and ethical developments of the 21st century social order. Our social construct has always encompassed global politics, diversity, and multi- racial and - ethnic environments but today these advances are progressing at the speed of light.
America has, from its birth, been a multi- cultural nation. Our ancestors were from England, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy and dozens of other countries. Our early immigrants, our forefathers were enthusiastically welcomed to America. Unless you are a Native American, you are not a native American; we learned in our history classes that America’s greatest strength is that we are a “melting pot.”
Present- day, we are welcoming Latinos, Asians, Africans and others from our global community. I observe nothing ridiculous in diversity, globalization and multi- culture. Instant communication has made our vast world small, and whether Americans like it or not, we are part of the diversified and multi- cultural global community. This is why I find it difficult to comprehend the rationale of the person who penned to the editor: “This ridiculous multi- culturalism and diversity nonsense, along with global politics, is going to destroy this nation. Liberal Progressives are at the forefront of this movement.”
Do you actually accept this as true? Where does this thought come from? Certainly not our own history. Do you believe that by demonizing with words the social cause of the Progressive Liberal thinker to make them appear evil, or by equating an untrue association with Socialism and Communism and repeat it enough times that people will believe your lie? I sincerely hope letters are read by people who will sensibly discern fact from fiction, truth from deceitfulness, and rhetoric from reality.
We are on the threshold of a massive explosion of information and understanding as we enter our brave new world. I hope people realize the wonder of our world. It’s a wonderful, exciting global place filled with opportunity for all who will to seize it. If we act intelligently and sensibly, I know the best is yet to come. George Lindholm
