Two actors play 24 characters in Five Star production
Those amusing redneck residents of Tuna, Texas, return in The Five Star Dinner Theatre’s production of “Tuna Does Vegas,” on Saturday and other select dates at 701 Central Ave.
An “all- you- can- eat” buffet starts at 6 p. m., catered by Belle Arti- Porterhouse Group.
The fourth play in the “Tuna” series, by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, features familiar characters and some new ones, all played by Stacey Castlebury and Tom Wilkins.
The show, directed by Kenneth Edwards, has plenty of laughs from tiny Tuna to the bright lights of Sin City.
Arles Struvie ( Castlebury) and his wife, Bertha ( Wilkins), plan to take a vacation and renew their wedding vows in Las Vegas, but their plan is hindered when other townsfolk follow.
Having two men play a total of 24 characters is an exercise in logistics that depends on an alert stage crew. When one character leaves a scene, he will return as someone else and the audience is never quite sure who is going to walk through the door.
Jessie Edwards and Bill Sexton are the backstage crew who make the character wardrobe changes happen.
Wilkins is “delightfully angry as macho, mustachioed Leonard Childres and wonderfully crotchety as the elderly Aunt Pearl Burras. Highlights of his physical comedy include Aunt Pearl’s debilitated disco dance and her sustained conniption fit.”
Castlebury plays Petey Fisk, “in his Coke- bottle glasses and flannel shirt and hat who is so earnest about his commitment to saving the Las Vegas show tigers, you want to help him.”
Other highlights are a scene with dueling Elvis impersonators, outrageous and tacky costumes by Hannah Mills when the showgirls hit the stage, and surprises throughout.
