Free throws in 4th shoot Wolves past El Dorado

EL DORADO — After rallying from a double- digit deficit, Lake Hamilton used deadly fourth- quarter free- throw shooting to pull out for a 72- 64 win over host El Dorado Friday night.

The Wolves ( 11- 9 overall, 4- 5 in 7A/ 6A- South) hit 17 of 18 free throws in the final period, Spencer Turner going 12 for 12. Lake Hamilton scored 26 fourth- quarter points, pulling away from a 46- all tie.

“In the fourth quarter we made game- winning plays,” Wolves coach Scotty Pennington said. “I don’t know what happened, but whatever happen worked.”

Turner finished with 18 points, Quan Gipson and Cody Worley each scoring 16 and Cade Hill 11. Hill had six rebounds, and Turner and Gipson three assists apiece.

El Dorado, No. 7 in the Arkansas Democrat- Gazette’s overall rankings ( No. 3 in 6A), hit five three- pointers to take a 20- 12 first- quarter lead. The Wolves pulled to 35- 33 at halftime.

El Dorado’s first- place girls overcame a four- point Lady Wolves lead, rallying for a 47- 40 win,.

Lake Hamilton ( 12- 9, 5- 4) outscored the Lady Wildcats ( 22- 1, 9- 0) 10- 5 in the second quarter to pull to 19- 18, and the teams were tied at 31 entering the fourth. The Lady Wolves’ Kylie Fraizer scored a game- high 15 point, s sinking three three- pointer, and Kori Bullard added 14. Taylor McCool led El Dorado with 12.

Lake Hamilton hosts Benton Tuesday.

Lakeside- Hope

HOPE — Tre Bland sank two free throws with 12 seconds left gave Lakeside a key 43- 42 conference road win over Hope Friday night.

Bland’s foul shots gave the Rams ( 8- 11, 5- 5 in 5A- South) their first lead of the second half. Hope ( 12- 8, 5- 5) outscored Lakeside 15- 9 in the third quarter for a 37- 31 lead.

Weston Jolly hit two fourth- quarter three- pointers, and DJ McAfee hit two free throws to pull the Rams to 42- 41 with 1: 24 to play.

Bland hit five three- points, finishing with a game- high 17 points. McAfee had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Jolly six points and six rebounds and Michael Igbokidi five points and 10 boards. Kenneth Thompson led Hope with 10 points.

The Lady Rams rebounded from a one- point loss to White Hall Tuesday, outlasting Hope 26- 22 behind sophomore Maddie Perrigo’s 20 points.

Lakeside ( 4- 16, 4- 6) held Hope ( 217, 0- 10) to one first- quarter point, and led 7- 1 at the first break and 18- 8 at halftime, Hope pulled to 20- 18 at the last break, but got no closer.

Lakeside plays Tuesday Springs.

Hot Springs- Fairview

at Hot

CAMDEN — Chave Zackery’s basket at the final buzzer gave Camden Fairview a 42- 41 win over visiting Hot Springs Friday night in a key 5A- South boys matchup.

Zackery’s shot came after a Trojans turnover with eight seconds left, and capped a Cardinals comeback from six points down in the last three minutes. Fairview ( 16- 7) moved to 7- 3 in conference, Hot Springs ( 12- 8) falling to 7- 2 after moving into first place with Tuesday’s win over Watson Chapel.

Matthew Ollison led the Cardinals with 15 points. Hot Springs’ Trey Lenox also had 15, fellow sophomore Kajuan Christon adding 10.

The Trojans rebounded from a two- point first quarter to outscore Fairview 15- 8 in the second for a 17- 14 lead. Hot Springs led 29- 23 after three quarters.

“We didn’t show up at the beginning of the ballgame,” Trojans coach Rodney Echols said. “We got going in the second quarter, then failed to finish the game.”

Hot Springs cruised to a 50- 13 victory in the girls game, remaining unbeaten atop the 5A- South and pushing their winning streak to 14 games. The Lady Trojans, ranked No. 2 in 5A by the Democrat- Gazette, held Fairview to three second- half points, shutting out the Lady Cardinals in the fourth.

Tiaunna Watkins led Hot Springs ( 15- 5, 9- 0) with 15 points, all in the second half. Berniezha Tidwell added 12.

Hot Springs hosts Lakeside Tuesday.

Fountain Lake- Episcopal

LITTLE ROCK — Strong in the first and third quarters, Fountain Lake ended the regular season on a winning note, securing the 3A- 5 conference’s No. 3 seed with a 60- 32 victory over last- place Episcopal Collegiate Saturday afternoon at Championsh­ip Gym. The Lady Cobras will return to Episcopal Collegiate Wednesday for the 3A- 5 district tournament, facing the winner of Benton Harmony Grove and Glen Rose for a spot in next week’s Region 2 tournament at Harmony Grove.

The Lady Cobras ( 14- 7, 9- 5) led 17- 5 after the first quarter and 35- 19 at halftime before using a 23- 8 third to lead 58- 27 at the end of the period, enacting the mercy rule for the fourth. Diedra McCoy, the league’s leading scorer, finished the regular season strongly with 35 points, Rilee Bryant adding 13.

Fountain Lake- Glen Rose

GLEN ROSE — McCoy scored 18 points and Bailey Womack 11 Friday night as Fountain Lake defeated Glen Rose 59- 33 in Class 3A- 5 girls basketball.

The Lady Cobras led 35- 21 at halftime, scoring 24 in the second quarter, and 48- 27 after three quarters.

Glen Rose’s boys outscored Fountain Lake 18- 7 in the second quarter, and held off a comeback for a 40- 39 win.

Justin Bates led Fountain Lake ( 515, 1- 12) with 13 points. The Cobras led 18- 15 at halftime after an 11- 5 second quarter.

Mountain Pine- England

ENGLAND — Devonta Patterson and Lawrence Tatum scored 19 points, and host England remained undefeated in 2A- 5 play with a 69- 35 win over Mountain Pine.

Tyrik Harris added 17 points for the Lions ( 22- 2, 12- 0), who led 43- 16 at halftime. Deion Johnson led Mountain Pine ( 6- 14, 4- 8) with 13 points, Dewayne Matlock adding 10.

Lawanda Criss scored 16 points to pace England’s girls’ 55- 29 victory. Julia Bryant and Sharra Shavers added 10 points apiece for the conference champion Lady Lions ( 21- 4, 11- 1), who led 27- 9 at halftime. Jessie Miller led Mountain Pine ( 10- 11, 4- 8) with nine points.

JH basketball: 2A- 5 tournament

MOUNTAIN PINE — Summer Godwin scored 19 points, and unbeaten Mountain Pine rolled into the 2A- 5 junior- high tournament championsh­ip game with a 49- 14 semifinal rout of Poyen Thursday night.

The host Lady Red Devils ( 10- 0) played Mount Ida on Saturday for the title. Mount Ida advanced Thursday with a 37- 34 win over England, Patty Anne Whisenhunt leading a balanced Lady Lion attack with nine points.

Magnet Cove and England met for the boys championsh­ip. Magnet Cove pulled out a 33- 30 semifinal win over Abundant Life Thursday, getting nine points each from Austin Barber and Jamil Tyner, and England crushed Mount Ida 56- 28 behind B. J. Thompson’s 26 points.

Cabot South- LHJH

PEARCY — Cabot South’s 33- 31 road victory over Lake Hamilton’s junior boys Thursday night left the Wolves No. 2 seed in the Central Arkansas Conference tournament.

Larenz Nero led Lake Hamilton ( 10- 9 overall, 6- 2 conference) with 14 points. Andrew Bennett added seven points for the Wolves, who play at 5: 30 p. m. Wednesday in Conway.

Noah Rengstorf scored 12 points and Juan Jackson six in the Wolves’ 37- 22 road win Monday over Conway White. Jackson had seven points in the eighth- grade game Thursday, Cabot South winning 31- 17.

* Lake Hamilton’s seventh- grade girls completed a 15- 0 season with Friday’s 34- 12 road win over Bryant. Caitlyn Porter scored 17 points to lead the Lady Wolves. Allison Trantham added six, Kit Adderholt five, Brooke Powell two and Mason Aitken and Sydney Campbell one point each.
