NPMC launches personalized health e- newsletter & health assessment resource

In mid- 2013, National Park Medical Center unveiled an innovative, personalized online health information resource available on the NPMC website at http:// www. nationalparkmedical. com.

The NPMC Health e- News allows subscribers to designate the health information they want to receive via any of five free services. “This adds a new dimension to the way we serve our community,” said Mandy Golleher, director of marketing and volunteers. “We’re committed to improving the health of Hot Springs area residents, and this new resource allows for easy access to the current health information that matters most to them. We hope this knowledge can help them make better informed decisions about their health.” The services include: • My Health Newsletter — Each month NPMC emails subscribers the latest health news on the topics they choose, pulled from hundreds of publications and journals, all medically reviewed.

• My Health Reminders — Subscribers tell us their age and gender, and we email them free, timely reminders for all of the key health screenings and exams they need.

• My Health Assessments — These comprehensive health and wellness tools give expert recommendations based on easy- to- use interactive questionnaires.

• My Baby Expectations — Expectant parents can subscribe to our free monthly email newsletter throughout pregnancy, delivery and baby’s first year. It includes emails on pregnancy, breastfeeding and baby’s development, as well as downloadable podcasts and lullabies.

“All of the content offered through each of these services undergoes three levels of review by medical experts,” said Golleher. “While we always support the family’s doctor as their best health resource, we also know that more than half of U. S. adults turn to the Internet for health information. We believe we can be a valuable partner in this community’s good health by connecting our subscribers to information that is both current and informative.”

NPMC Health e- News subscribers receive only the topics and information they request via password- protected, secure online communication.

Registration for any service is free at http:// www. nationalparkmedical. com by clicking on the “Health Info” tab at the top of the page.

NPMC Auxiliary Begins New Community Projects

In 2013, the NPMC Auxiliary started two new community projects. H. E. L. P. ( Helmet Emergency Labeling Program) provides complimentary helmet decals for area residents, to help educate the community on what to do in the event of a bicycling, skating, or skateboarding accident. The decals include a small label for the outside of the helmet noting, “In case of an accident, this helmet should only be removed by a trained health care professional.” The inside helmet label provides a place for parents to complete the child’s name, parent’s name, contact information and allergies in the event that a child must be transported to a hospital. Should a child have an accident, the decals provide valuable information to whoever provides assistance. These decals are free to the community, and may be picked up from the NPMC Gift shop Monday- Friday from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m. or Saturday from 10 a. m. to 3 p. m.

Also available in the gift shop is new information on Alzheimer’s. The information includes checklists, warning signs, and information for caregivers and individuals who are living with or caring for those with Alzheimer’s. This information is also complimentary and provided for the community’s benefit by the NPMC Auxiliary.

For more information on any of these programs, or to learn more about how to become an NPMC Auxilian, please call Golleher at 620- 2705 or visit http:// www. nationalparkmedical. com and click the Community link.

NPMC Welcomes Area’s First and Only Infectious Diseases Specialist

National Park Medical Center proudly welcomed adult and pediatric infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Kathy Liverett, to their medical staff in August of 2013. Dr. Liverett’s practice, The Hot Springs Infectious Diseases Clinic, is the first and only infectious disease- devoted clinic in the area and sees patients of all ages for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infections.

A native Arkansan, Dr. Liverett received her undergraduate degree from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. She earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, where she also completed her residency and internship for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. She continued with fellowship training in the area of adult and pediatric infectious diseases at UAMS, John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Liverett is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and board eligible for adult and pediatric infectious diseases.

“Being a new specialty to this area, my goal is to work with patients and physicians to provide more accessible care for more of their health care needs,” said Dr. Liverett. “I aim to foster a team- focused care philosophy, ensuring that both the patient and the team of medical professionals receive the highest level of quality health care alongside effective communication about the diagnosis and treatment plan.”

NPMC Recognized for Satisfaction, Leadership – Jerry Mabry, Robbie Pettey receive leadership awards

National Park Medical Center was the recipient of several prestigious awards at Capella Healthcare’s annual leadership conference. Among the awards the hospital received were Highest Outpatient Satisfaction, Best Medical Staff Retention and Highest Employee Satisfaction. Additionally, Robbie Pettey received the CFO Leadership Award and Jerry Mabry received a CEO Leadership Award.

“Our entire group of health care professionals and support staff works diligently every day to provide the very best in quality services and patient care, which ultimately led to this recognition,” said Mabry, Capella’s Arkansas market president. “These awards are certainly something that the entire Hot Springs community can be proud of.”

The awards compared the 13 Capella hospitals across the country, and the presentation is a highlight of Capella’s annual summer leadership conference. The hospital awards are focused on the company’s five pillars of operational excellence — People, Service, Quality, Growth and Financial Stability.

NPMC was also recognized for its improvement in operating expenses, which was highlighted during the recognition of Pettey as Capella’s hospital CFO of the year. “Robbie has been the anchor of financial operations for National Park Medical Center for more than two decades,” said Mike Wiechart, president and CEO for Capella Healthcare, in presenting the award. “She maintains a daily focus on the hospital’s financial performance and has a passion for perfection in numbers. Her understanding of the importance of making budget, blended with the achievement of all operational goals, creates excellent balance with the teamwork that’s required to get the right results. She has been highly instrumental in the consistent long- term successful performance of this high- performing hospital.”

Additionally, Mabry was presented the CEO leadership award for his work with both National Park Medical Center and Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville. “Jerry is an outstanding leader who, even during times of change or uncertainty, can lead his team in achieving results,” said Wiechart. “National Park was honored for achievements in four of our five pillars this year. These awards demonstra te how NPMC is providing excellent care for patients as well as a rewarding workplace for employees and physicians. Without Jerry’s strong leadership skills and unwavering commitment to teamwork, these achievements would not have been possible.”

NPMC Invests in Property, Plans for Expansion

National Park Medical Center recently began clearing and preparing almost nine acres of land adjacent to their current location for the purpose of completing some key expansion initiatives by the end of 2014. The expansion space is located to the west of the hospital between the HSCC golf course and Hollywood Avenue. “We are looking forward to expanding some key service lines, and continuing our mission to meet the growing health care needs of the Hot Springs region,” said Mabry.

Detailed building plans are not yet ready for public release, but expanded service lines are expected to include a self- contained expanded Cardiology Center of Excellence, medical imaging, emergency services, outpatient services, surgery and women’s services. Other key services will be phased in over the next two to three years. “Architectural plans are in the works and we look forward to sharing detailed building schematics as they become available” said Golleher. “The most recent architectural estimates indicate the projects could be in the range of a $ 40- 45 million dollar investment when all stages are complete” said Mabry.

NPMC is planning updates to the current building and property which will include new flooring, furnishings, corridor updates, cosmetics and a new chapel.

“We have been extremely appreciative of the outpouring of support from physicians, patients and the community especially in the past year and a half. We have been very busy continuing to pursue our mission of what’s required to deliver the very best short and long- term health care solutions to this region. Our commitment to this process has never wavered and is stronger today than ever” said Mabry.

NPMC Receives Regional Recognition from Cancer Society – Staff Raises more than $ 20,000

National Park Medical Center was recognized by the American Cancer Society for their dedication to the fight for a cure at both the local

and regional levels during 2013. NPMC’s Relay for Life team raised more than $ 20,000 over the year- long fundraising period for this year’s event, making them the top fundraiser in Garland County and in the entire Central Arkansas region for the society. They were also recognized for “Most Team Spirit” and second place in this year’s costume contest at Relay for Life held in June.

“Our team works very hard every year to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society — but this year was a particularly motivating one for us here at NPMC,” said NPMC’s team captain, Pat Herrin. “We truly believe in the ACS’s programming that benefits local cancer patients and the research and education that they fund to raise awareness and advocate research for a cure. But this year, the fight was more personal than ever before.” In July, National Park Medical Center lost a central team- member and nearly 40year employee — human resources director, Sandra Culliver — to cancer after a two- year battle. “Sandra was — and still is — a major motivation for our team’s exemplary efforts for the ACS,” said Herrin. “Her strength, will to live, and refusal to let cancer take over her life gave us a constant reminder of why we are fighting for a cure.”

National Park Medical Center’s fundraising efforts are more than just hospital- wide — they are more of a community undertaking. This year marked the 25th Annual Daffodil Days, where NPMC staff sold and delivered daffodil orders all around town — and sold daffodils at Oaklawn Park for race- goers. 2013 was the 11th Annual NPMC Easter Basket Silent Auction, where community businesses, individuals and organizations, as well as NPMC employees and vendors, donate items for a day- long silent auction which benefits the American Cancer Society. The team also hosted multiple bake sales, a jeans day at the hospital, a portrait sales fundraiser, and spring flowers sales, all to benefit the ACS. A portion of their team T- shirt sales went to the cause, and they donated silent auction items to the ACS Gala in August to further benefit the society.

“It’s a passion for us,” said Herrin. “Obviously we work in a field where we see the impact of cancer daily. But many of our core team members are non- clinical employees — and I think that’s because we want to be able to make a difference for those patients as well. It’s a lot of work. But on the night of Relay when we see the track surrounded by luminaries — each representing a person who has so personally fought the fight — and when we watch the survivors lap and the caregivers lap — it’s more than worth all of our time, efforts and dollars spent to help find a cure.

NPMC Opens New Chapel Inside Hospital Hospital plans to host weekly services, faithbased organizations

National Park Medical Center constructed a new chapel complete with seating for 43, a stage and pulpit area, audio/ visual system and a large mosaic centerpiece. “We knew it was time for an upgrade from the original chapel that was built with the original building,” said Mabry. “Spiritual and emotional well- being has always been an important part of our focus for patients’, guests’ and employees’ lives, and our needs had outgrown our previous chapel’s capacities. This new chapel will be an asset to our facility, and ultimately, a great resource for our community’s faith- based organizations as we will make it available to them for appropriate use.”

NPMC hosted an open house of the chapel, and short service, on Wednesday, Jan. 15, which included prayer by NPMC’s chaplain, Don Reeves, remarks by Mabry and the NPMC pastoral care committee chairman and director of physical therapy, Steve Burns, and a short message by John McCallum, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hot Springs.

“Our pastoral care committee has been hard at work on plans for the chapel as well as additional spiritual resources for patients, guests and employees at NPMC,” said Burns. The NPMC pastoral care committee is comprised of an interdisciplinary group of employees whose mission is to provide, direct and sustain spiritual as well as physical comfort, healing and support through ministerial and lay resources. Burns continued, “Our ultimate plan with the chapel is to host a weekly service, open to employees, visitors, patients and the public, with rotating pastors of multiple denominations. We are also aiming to provide either a phone line or video link on our website featuring the weekly message.”

For questions or additional information about the chapel or the pastoral care committee, contact Burns at 620- 1460.
