Showmen’s Ladies Auxiliary announces officers

-

Hot Springs Showmen’s Association recently announced the 2014 officers for the ladies auxiliary. Hot Springs has been a winter retreat for carnival people for generations. Bathhouse Row, Oaklawn Jockey Club and, for a while, casino gambling provided the atmosphere for a short winter’s rest for “carnies.”

In 1948, in the home of Harry and Alice Hennies, Hot Springs Showmen’s Association was formed. Shortly thereafter, the ladies auxiliary came together. In 1954, HSSA clubroom building was constructed on Whittington Avenue.

The association officially starts in late October, depending on the length of time members are on the road, and remains open until mid- March or April. The meetings are on Thursday nights after a dinner prepared by the auxiliary.

Through fundraisers, the auxiliary and men’s association provide scholarships each year, Christmas for underprivileged children and care packages for those in need. A major concern of the association is the health and well- being of its members and others less fortunate in the community.

The auxiliary will host it second annual “Carousel Cuties Pageant” on Feb. 22 at the HSSA Club building, 710 Whittington Ave.

It also has a yard sale, Silver Tea with silent auction and other fundraising events throughout the year.
