Desormeaux brothers take BC Juvenile

ARCADIA, Calif. — Texas Red pulled a 13-1 upset in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile for 2-year-olds.

The Desormeaux brothers teamed for the victory on Saturday at Santa Anita. Kent was aboard for his fifth Breeders’ Cup victory. Keith, the trainer and a co-owner, got his first win in the championsh­ips.

Texas Red was a decisive winner, beating 9- 5 favorite Carpe Diem by 6 1/2 lengths. Upstart was a neck back in third.

The time was 1:41.91 for the 1 1/16 miles.

Texas Red paid $29.80, $9.80 and $5.60. Carpe Diem returned $3.80 and $2.80 while Upstart paid $3.60 to show.

The Juvenile is the first major test for horses on the road to next year’s Kentucky Derby.

Turf

ARCADIA, Calif. — Main Sequence repelled the late challenge of Flintshire to win the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf by a half-length, giving the U.S. the victory in a race usually dominated by Europeans.

Ridden by John Velazquez, Main Sequence ran 1 1/2 miles in 2:24.91 and paid $14.40, $5.80 and $ 4.20 at 6- 1 odds. The 5-year- old gelding is unbeaten in four starts since coming to the barn of Maryland-based

BLUE

trainer Graham Motion.

Previously, Main Sequence was based in Britain.

Britain- bred Flintshire, second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris last month, returned $4.80 and $3.60. Twilight Eclipse was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $6.40 to show.

Telescope, the 8-5 favorite, finished fourth in the field of 12.

Ireland-bred Magician, the defending champion, was withdrawn earlier in the week because of lameness.

Turf Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. — Bobby’s Kitten edged 7-2 favorite No Nay Never by a half-length to win the $1 million Turf Sprint, giving trainer Chad Brown his third Breeders’ Cup win of the weekend.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Bobby’s Kitten ran 6½ furlongs on the downhill course in 1:12.73 and paid $16.40, $8 and $6.20 at 7-1 odds.

Brown won the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf with Dayatthesp­a earlier Saturday at Santa Anita, and the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf with Lady Eli on Friday.

No Nay Never returned $6.60 and $4.80, edging Undrafted in a photo finish for second.

Owned by Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker, Undrafted was another nose back in third and paid $7.60 to show.

Wesley Ward trains both No Nay Never and Undrafted. He earlier won two Breeders’ Cup races.

Filly & Mare Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. — Judy the Beauty rallied to win the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint by a head, giving trainer Wesley Ward his second Breeders’ Cup victory on the weekend.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Judy the Beauty ran seven furlongs in 1: 21.92. She paid $8.20, $4.60 and $3.60 as the slight 3-1 favorite in the field of 10 on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Smith notched his 21st Cup victory; the 49-year-old rider is the career leader among jockeys in both victories and purse earnings.

Ward also owns Judy the Beauty, a 5-year-old mare who finished second in last year’s race to Groupie Doll. She had been idle since Aug. 17, when she won a stakes race at Del Mar

Ward won the $1 million Juvenile Turf on Friday with Hootenanny.

Better Lucky returned $16.40 and $10, while Thank You Marylou paid $13.80 to show.

Filly & Mare Turf

ARCADIA, Calif. — Dayat-

thespa led all the way to win the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, giving trainer Chad Brown a 1-2 finish.

Dayatthesp­a held off stablemate Stephanie’s Kitten by 1 1/4 lengths on Saturday at Santa Anita. Just The Judge was third, another half-length back. Dank, the defending champion, ran fourth. It was the third Breeders’ Cup win for Brown, and second this weekend. He won the Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday with Lady Eli.

Dayatthesp­a paid $13, $6.60 and $4.60. Stephanie’s Kitten returned $5.20 and $3.80 while Just The Judge paid $4.60 to show.

Javier Castellano was aboard for his fourth Breeders’ Cup victory.

The time was 2:00.12 for 1 1/4 miles on the course rated good after overnight rain.
