HSPD offers tips for driving in bad weather

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

In addition to the significant damage caused by this week’s severe thunderstorms, the resulting power outages also rendered many traffic signals temporarily nonoperational, which created hazardous driving conditions.

“The Hot Springs Police Department would like to remind motorists when traffic control devices, such as red lights, are not working, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop,” Cpl. Kirk Zaner said in a news release.

According to Arkansas Statute 27-51501 regarding vehicles approaching or entering intersections:

• The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right of way to a vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.

• When two vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right of way to the vehicle on the right.

Zaner noted motorists should use extra caution during inclement weather conditions and avoid driving unless necessary when conditions such as severe storms, flash flooding or icy roads present added dangers.

With school back in session, Zaner also reminds motorists it is illegal to use any electronic devices, to include talking on cellphones or texting, while in active school zone areas.

According to Arkansas Statute 27-511609 regarding school zone restrictions, the driver of a motor vehicle “shall not use a hand-held wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle when passing a school building or school zone during school hours when children are present and outside the building.”
