Akansa Chapter NSDAR donates dictionaries, bookmarks, lapel pins

-

The Akansa Chapter NSDAR visited Mountain Pine School to deliver dictionaries to the two third-grade classes. The 41 students also received “Preamble of the Constitution” bookmarks and USA flag lapel pins. Justin Magness and Deanne Thockmorton are the teachers.

The women talked about the Daughters of the American Revolution and their revolutionary ancestors. The dictionaries were put to use as they played look-up word games

(homonyms) with the students.

The funds to buy dictionaries come from the interest of an endowment given in memory of Akansa organizing member Ellenora Cramer Thompson by her two nieces and nephew. This makes the 13th year the chapter has given dictionaries to the Mountain Pine third-graders. This project has touched the lives of 607 students.

“Dictionary Project sponsors (Akansa Chapter, NSDAR) choose to enlighten others by giving them the gift of words — a personal dictionary that can increase their vocabulary and improve their communication skills. This gift in turn sheds light on all other areas of knowledge, as students are able to understand and use more resources to learn about their world,” as stated in The Dictionary Project Winter 2014 newsletter.
