A Hot Springs man was charged with battery Wednesday after allegedly striking his daughter for being suspended from school.

Tarrel Deshawn Macon, 38, who lists a 210 Wall St. address, was taken into custody at 11 a.m. and charged with second-degree battery, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He remained in custody Thursday in lieu of zero bond and is set to appear June 7 in Garland County District Court.

According to the affidavit, Hot Springs police School Resource Officer Chris Shoemaker responded to Hot Springs Intermediate School in regard to a juvenile female who stated she was “beaten” by Macon, her father. Shoemaker observed dark red, purple and blue bruising and welts on her upper back, both arms and backside of her right leg. One welt appeared to be scabbed over from bleeding.

The victim stated her father became angry with her when she came home Tuesday suspended from school. Macon allegedly struck her numerous times with a green extension cord. She said the incident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday at a Freeman Street residence and she was unable to get help until Wednesday morning after her father left for work.

A warrant was issued for Macon’s arrest and he was transported to the police department and questioned. He reportedly said he was upset with his daughter for getting suspended and “whooped” her. Macon first stated he struck her with a belt, but later allegedly admitted to using an extension cord. Macon was shown images of the victim’s injuries and he acknowledged the incident “got out of hand.” He also stated he tried other discipline techniques, but they did not work.
