In the United States, less than 35 percent of households and 10 percent of businesses recycle regularly. These numbers indicate only a small improvemen­t in participat­ion in the past 15 years, despite billions of dollars invested in awareness campaigns, standardiz­ed recycling labels, increased opportunit­ies for recycling and improved sorting techniques. Increasing participat­ion in the U.S. to 75 percent would have an equivalent environmen­tal impact to removing 50 million cars from roadways each year, add 1.5 million jobs to the economy and further protection of natural resources.

The city of Hot Springs offers the Earth Angel Recycling Program curbside collection service. Earth Angel bins are free and curbside collection takes place every other week. Last week, Earth Angels of Hot Springs recycled: 89 pounds, aluminum cans; 5,193 pounds, newspaper; 656 pounds, corrugated cardboard; 665 pounds, plastics; 20,280 pounds, yard waste. A total of 13.44 tons of recyclable materials were kept out of the landfill.
