Electronic communication methods have reduced paper use, yet we are not a completely paperless society. Recycling paper is important for protecting forests, those vital ecosystems on which we all depend. Forests aid in filtering water, reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, providing habitat for most of the world’s land dwelling animals, protecting soil from erosion and more. The average person recycles about 340 pounds of paper each year. Recycled paper can be used to produce newsprint, tissue, box board and other products. Producing a ton of paper from recycled materials cuts energy consumption by one-half, as compared to production from raw materials and 17 trees are saved.
