Diamante golf event benefits veterans

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Diamante Country Club is host May 15 to the eighth annual Freedom Fund scramble golf tournament, raising funds for Arkansas veterans and wounded warriors.

Shotgun starts are scheduled at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The $125 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, range balls, a golf hat, lunch, prizes and a silent auction. According to a release, Diamante Country Club has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the top five courses in Arkansas.

Among the scheduled participants is a warrior paralyzed from the waist down and another who lost both legs in Vietnam. According to a release, they will be riding in and playing from adaptive golf carts purchased by Arkansas Freedom Fund.

The AFF golf committee has set a goal of $50,000 for the fund, which focuses on rehabilitative sports and outdoor events for Arkansas veterans and wounded warriors. Since its inception in 2010, the golf tournament has raised more than $250,000 for the all-volunteer fund.

In addition to golf, the AFF also has major programs in bicycling, fishing, hunting and hiking, all designed to restore the mental and physical wellness of Arkansas wounded warriors and their families.

To reach the $50,000 goal, the committee welcomes additional individual and corporate sponsors along with items for the silent auction.
