Nurse, lupus survivor to address Lupus meeting

The Lupus Foundation of Arkansas Inc. will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at Levi Hospital, 300 Prospect Ave. Parking is in the rear.

The guest speaker will be Shaneca Smith, BSN, RN, CNOR, who is a registered nurse and outreach specialist for Arkansas Foundation for Medical

Rock. She has worked in var- ious nursing roles and is a lupus survivor.

After many years of symptoms, she was diagnosed with Systemic and Discoid Lupus in 2013. “She is passionate about not being defined by her diagnoses and believes it is important for lupus survivors to be in control of their perspectiv­es,” states the press release.

“Having Lupus means that there are times that you have to accept your limitation­s, learn to flow with the changes each day brings, but keep on living and loving each day,” she said in the release. Smith will speak on “Prescripti­on Drugs.” The meeting is opened to anyone and everyone who takes prescripti­on drugs, especially if they have more than one health provider prescribin­g these drugs.

CDXVIIC to learn about ‘Early Women’s History’

The Col. John Washington Chapter Colonial Dames of the 17th Century will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hot Springs Country Club.

Angela Boswell, dean of the Matt Locke Ellis College of Arts of Sciences and professor of history at Henderson State University, will be the speaker.

She received her Ph.D. and

M.A. in history from Rice University and her B.A. in history and English at Southweste­rn University, Georgetown, Texas.

Boswell’s research and teaching focus on early U.S. history, particular­ly Southern history, women’s history and colonial America. She has authored a book on Texas women, “Her Act and Deed: Women’s Lives in a Rural Southern County, 1837-73,” which won the Liz Carpenter Award for the Best Scholarly Book on the History of Women and Texas; has co-edited three volumes on Southern women’s history, including last year’s release, “Women in Civil War Texas.” She has published essays and articles in academic journals and books and is completing a book surveying the history of Texas women.

Computer seminar Sept. 25 at Garland County Library

Hot Springs Tech Learning Center will present a seminar with the Garland County Library from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 25. It is open to everyone. Persons may sign up at the Garland County Library desk.

John “Happy Clicking” McFerrin will speak on subjects including, using Google Maps, news and images, how to create greeting and business cards, adding photos to the computer, utilizing YouTube. com and creating personal stationery. He will give a demo using Google Earth.

Rosemarie Kawlewski, a Windows 10 instructor, will speak on navigating Window 10 programs, working apps, creating desktop shortcuts, creating internet favorites and saving data to a flash drive.
