DAR chapter hears from retired Vietnam veteran
The John Percifull Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at West Shores Retirement Community. Lunch is $10. The program begins at 12:30 p.m.
The speaker will be Hugh Mills, retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, a Hot Springs native and recipient of three
Silver Stars. His program is entitled “Reconciliation,” about his experiences during and after Vietnam.

HSV Genealogical to meet Thursday
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Join the Hot Springs Village Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. Thursday in Room 6 of the Coronado Center for “Researching at the Midwest Genealogy Center,” presented by Cheryl Lang, MLS from Independence, Mo. This meeting is open to the public.
Lang is the manager of the Midwest Genealogy Center branch of Mid-Continent Public Library. She obtained her master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan., and bachelor degrees in management and computers from Webster University, St. Louis. She serves as first vice president of the Missouri State Genealogical Association and belongs to several local genealogy societies. She is a member of the History Section and the Genealogy Committee of the Reference and User Services Association of the American Library Association.
HSVGS meets the first Thursday of each month, September through May. There is a
breakfast meeting at 9 a.m. the third Thursday of every month at Debra’s Restaurant on Carmona Road where topics of interest are informally shared and discussed. American Legion hold Halloween karaoke party
American Legion, 3237 Albert Pike, will host a Halloween karaoke party at 6 p.m. today starting with a finger potluck followed by karaoke from 7-11 p.m. Door prizes and costume contest. No masks allowed. Raffle items. Public welcome.
Radio club hosts volunteer examiner test
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Hot Springs Village Amateur Radio Club will sponsor a volunteer examiner testing session at 9:15 a.m. Saturday in Room D at Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave. The doors open at 9 a.m.
Anyone interested in upgrading their amateur license or obtaining a new one is welcome. Call Bill Stewart, WA9AQQ, at 915-0976, for information or to register.
Upgrade candidates are required to bring a photo ID, their original signed amateur license and any applicable CSCEs. A processing fee of $15 will be collected. Unlicensed candidates need only bring the photo ID plus the fee.
HSV men’s garden club topic on poisonous plants
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Men’s Village Garden Club will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Village United Methodist Church. Coffee and snacks will be available at 8:30 a.m. Tamara Walkingstick will present “Poisonous Plants in Your Garden.” Guests and anyone interested in gardening are welcome.
Walkingstick is associate professor of extension forestry for the University of Arkansas and associate director for the Arkansas Forest Resources Center. Her statewide responsibilities include general forest management education for adults and youth.
A brief business meeting will follow the program.

Shady Grove Cemetery meeting rescheduled
The Shady Grove Cemetery Association’s annual meeting has been rescheduled to 2 p.m. Nov. 5 on the cemetery grounds, weather permitting. All members and anyone interested in the cemetery are encouraged to attend.
