He was born May 29, 1937, in Severy, Kan., to Charles W. Vann and Rowena A. Phillips. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert Vann Sr. (Gerrie), Bill Vann (Joyce) and Donald Vann (Peggy).

Jerry was raised in Howard, Kan., and attended Howard High School. At age 17, he joined the Navy, which allowed him to travel the world. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service at the rank of BTC (Boilerman Chief Petty Officer). Many years later, he also retired from the Arkansas Department of Labor as a deputy boiler inspector. Adapting to civilian life brought him to Henderson State University, where he earned a degree in social work. Yearning for the country life landed the family in Fountain Lake, Ark., which at the time many considered the middle of nowhere. On his farm, he enjoyed raising horses, pigs, goats, rabbits and chickens. His cowboy spirit loved riding horses, his tractor and wearing his western clothes. He had an affection for buying new boots — even when he had 10 pairs.

Some of his guilty pleasures were lounging in his recliner watching “Andy Griffith,” football, “Gunsmoke” and old Western movies. Jerry loved eating at his favorite local restaurants, Home Plate Café and Red Lobster, who have the nicest staff. While enjoying a good game of cards, he could also play a mean game of dominoes. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and First Christian Church. His greatest joys in life were his wife Alice, his children, and their families. He always said he was the “luckiest man in the world,” because he felt loved by so many family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
